Overview

Femara 2.5mg Tablet contains letrozole 2.5mg, a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor mainly used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women, both as adjuvant therapy after primary treatment and for advanced or metastatic disease. It is sometimes also used by fertility specialists, off-label, to induce ovulation.

Letrozole works by blocking the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting androgens into oestrogen in body tissues. By lowering circulating oestrogen levels, letrozole slows or stops the growth of breast cancer cells that depend on oestrogen to grow.

How it Works

Letrozole selectively and reversibly inhibits the aromatase enzyme, blocking the peripheral conversion of androstenedione and testosterone into oestrone and oestradiol. This significantly lowers circulating oestrogen levels, depriving oestrogen-dependent breast cancer cells of the hormone signal that drives their growth.

Directions for Use

Take Femara 2.5mg Tablet once daily at about the same time, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Continue treatment for as long as your doctor prescribes, even if you feel well, and do not stop without discussing it with your doctor first.

Dosage

The usual dose of Femara 2.5mg Tablet for breast cancer is one tablet taken once daily, with treatment duration determined by your oncologist based on your specific diagnosis and treatment plan. When used for ovulation induction, the dose and timing are individualised by your fertility specialist and typically differ from the breast cancer regimen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Femara 2.5mg Tablet used for?

Femara 2.5mg Tablet is mainly used to treat hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Some fertility specialists also use it off-label to help induce ovulation; your doctor will confirm the reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why do I get joint pain and hot flushes with this medicine?

These are very common effects of lowering oestrogen levels, which is how letrozole works. Tell your doctor if these symptoms are severe or affecting your daily life, as they may be able to suggest ways to manage them.

Does letrozole affect my bones?

Yes, prolonged use can reduce bone density, so your doctor may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplementation and periodic bone density (DEXA) scans, especially with long-term treatment.

How long will I need to take this medicine?

Treatment duration depends on your specific diagnosis and treatment plan, and is determined by your oncologist – some breast cancer treatment courses last several years.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Femara 2.5mg Tablet?
