Overview

Difflam AB Sore Throat Lozenges are medicated lozenges sold in Malaysia as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product. Each lozenge contains two antiseptic active ingredients, 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol 1.2 mg and amylmetacresol 0.6 mg. The letters AB in the name stand for Anti-Bacterial, and the lozenges are sold in several flavours, so please check the flavour shown on the DoctorOnCall product page.

It is important to note that Difflam is a brand name that covers more than one product. The Malaysian Difflam AB lozenge does not contain benzydamine or cetylpyridinium chloride, which are the active ingredients of other Difflam products and of the Difflam lozenges sold in some other markets. Because product names and formulations can differ between countries, please always read the active ingredients printed on the pack you receive.

Difflam AB Sore Throat Lozenges 6s can be bought through DoctorOnCall without needing a doctor’s prescription, and the pack contains 6 lozenges, with a 12-lozenge pack also sold separately. The lozenges are for adults and children aged 6 years and over and are dissolved slowly in the mouth. The active ingredients are the same two found in Strepsils lozenges, so Difflam AB should not be taken together with Strepsils or other lozenges containing 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol or amylmetacresol.

Directions for Use

  • Dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth; do not chew it or swallow it whole.
  • Repeat every 2 to 3 hours as required, and do not take more than 12 lozenges in a day.
  • For adults and children aged 6 years and over only; do not give to children under 6 years.
  • Do not use together with other medicated lozenges that contain 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol or amylmetacresol, such as Strepsils.
  • If symptoms persist or get worse after 3 days, stop using the lozenges and consult a doctor.

Dosage

Adults and children aged 6 years and over: dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth every 2 to 3 hours as required, up to a maximum of 12 lozenges per day, as stated by the Malaysian manufacturer. Do not give to children under 6 years. If you miss a dose there is nothing to make up, as the lozenges are taken only when needed. If symptoms last more than 3 days, or are accompanied by fever, rash or headache, stop using the lozenges and consult a doctor.

Shelf Life

Use Difflam AB Sore Throat Lozenges before the expiry date printed on the pack. Check the expiry date and batch number before each use, and do not use lozenges that are past their expiry date or that look damaged or sticky.

Storage Instructions

Store as directed on the pack, generally in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep the lozenges in their original pack until use, and keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild irritation, tingling or a warm sensation in the mouth or on the tongue, and temporary changes in taste while the lozenge dissolves.
  • Common: Mild stomach upset or nausea, especially if more lozenges than directed are taken.
  • Serious: Allergic reaction such as skin rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, which needs urgent medical attention.
  • Serious: Difficulty breathing or wheezing after taking the lozenge, which needs emergency medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic or hypersensitive to 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, amylmetacresol or any other ingredient in the lozenge.
  • Do not give to children under 6 years.
  • Do not use together with other medicated lozenges that contain the same antiseptic ingredients, such as Strepsils.
  • Do not exceed 12 lozenges in a day.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug interactions have been established at the labelled lozenge dose, but please tell your pharmacist about all medicines you take.
  • Other medicated lozenges, sprays or gargles containing 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol or amylmetacresol (for example Strepsils variants): avoid using them together, to prevent duplicate dosing.
  • Other Difflam products have different active ingredients, such as benzydamine, so check the label before combining any Difflam products.
  • No specific food interactions are known; it is best not to eat or drink while a lozenge is dissolving, so that it stays in contact with the mouth and throat.

Quick Tips

  • Let the lozenge dissolve slowly; do not chew it or swallow it whole.
  • Space the lozenges 2 to 3 hours apart and never take more than 12 in a day.
  • Do not combine with Strepsils or any other lozenge containing the same two active ingredients.
  • Check the active ingredients printed on the pack, because Difflam products differ between products and countries.
  • Check the pack for sugar content if you have diabetes or monitor your sugar intake.
  • Keep the lozenges out of the reach of young children, who should not be given them.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use Difflam AB Sore Throat Lozenges only as directed on the pack, and do not give them to children under 6 years. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have diabetes, or take other medicines, and avoid using other medicated lozenges with the same active ingredients, such as Strepsils, at the same time. Difflam is a brand name that covers products with different active ingredients, so always check the ingredients printed on your pack. Keep the lozenges out of the reach of children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor if your symptoms last more than 3 days, get worse, or come with fever, rash, headache, nausea or vomiting, or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, a spreading rash, or any sign of a severe allergic reaction.
