Overview

Systane Balance Eye Drops is supplied as eye drops, with is Propylene Glycol (0. It is supplied in a pack size of 10ml.

No prescription is required for this product, as it is an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine. This page is limited to product, safety and handling information.

If you would like guidance before buying, you can speak to a doctor or pharmacist through an online consultation on DoctorOnCall. Orders are dispensed by a registered pharmacist and delivered to your address.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands before use, and shake the bottle well before each application, as this is an emulsion-type formulation. Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently squeeze 1-2 drops into each eye without letting the bottle tip touch the eye or any other surface. Blink several times to help distribute the drop evenly across the eye surface.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait about 15 minutes before reinserting them, since the lipid-supporting ingredients can affect lens fit or clarity. If using other eye drops, space applications at least 5 minutes apart.

Dosage

The typical adult dose is 1-2 drops instilled into each affected eye as needed throughout the day, or as directed by a healthcare provider, and it is suitable for regular daily use. If your symptoms persist or worsen despite consistent use, or if you find you need it far more often than a few times a day, stop self-treating and see a doctor or optometrist, as this may point to an underlying eye condition that needs specific management.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. As with most multi-dose eye drop emulsions, check the printed guidance on your specific pack for the manufacturer’s recommended in-use period after first opening, and discard the bottle once that period has passed even if product remains, or ask your pharmacist if this is not clearly stated.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25-30°C (room temperature), away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use, and keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use the drops if the emulsion has changed colour, become unusually cloudy, or separated in a way that does not restore on shaking.

Side Effects

  • Common: mild, transient stinging or burning immediately after instilling the drop.
  • Common: brief blurring of vision or a temporary greasy/coated feeling on the eye right after application.
  • Serious: allergic reaction with eye redness, swelling, itching, or eyelid rash — stop use and seek medical advice if this occurs.
  • Serious: persistent eye pain, worsening redness, or vision changes continuing beyond 72 hours of use — this needs prompt medical assessment.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to propylene glycol or any other ingredient in the formulation.
  • Do not use if the bottle tip or cap is damaged, or if the solution appears discoloured, cloudy, or contaminated.
  • Not intended for use in eyes with a suspected active infection, penetrating injury, or shortly after eye surgery unless a doctor has specifically advised it is appropriate.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • As a topical eye drop with minimal systemic absorption, no clinically meaningful drug or food interactions are known for this product.
  • If using other eye drops or ointments, space them at least 5 minutes apart from Systane Balance so that one product does not dilute or wash out the effect of another.
  • No specific food or beverage interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Shake the bottle gently before each use, since the lipid-supporting ingredients can settle between applications.
  • Use warm compresses on closed eyelids before applying the drops, if advised by your eye doctor as part of an eyelid care routine.
  • Blink fully and deliberately during long screen sessions to help spread the tear film evenly.
  • Apply the drops before eye makeup to avoid pushing makeup particles into the eye.
  • Keep the bottle at your desk or bedside for consistent, regular use.
  • If you find you need the drops very frequently on most days, ask a pharmacist whether an eyelid hygiene routine alongside the drops may help.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

The active ingredient is Propylene Glycol (0.6%) – a lubricant that provides long-lasting moisture. Other key ingredients include mineral oil, dimyristoyl phosphatidylglycerol, sorbitan tristearate, boric acid, and purified water.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Systane Balance is for external, topical use in the eye only. Contact lens wearers should remove lenses before use and wait about 15 minutes before reinserting them. Pregnant or breastfeeding women can generally use this topical lubricant, as systemic absorption is minimal, but should check with a pharmacist if concerned. Vision may be briefly blurred after use, so wait until it clears before driving or operating machinery, and supervise use in young children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using the drops and see a doctor, optometrist, or pharmacist if you experience eye pain, sudden vision changes, persistent redness, unusual discharge, or if your symptoms do not improve or worsen after using the drops as directed for more than 72 hours. Symptoms that keep recurring can also be a sign of an underlying eyelid or tear-gland condition that benefits from a proper eye examination rather than continued self-treatment.
