Systane Gel Drop Lubricant Eye Gel

Systane Gel Drop Lubricant Eye Gel is an over-the-counter ophthalmic lubricant from the Systane range, formulated as a thicker, gel-forming solution containing polyethylene glycol as its principal lubricating ingredient, together with a gelling agent that increases its viscosity. It belongs to the class of ocular demulcents (lubricant eye drops/gels) and does not require a prescription in Malaysia.

Its higher viscosity compared with regular Systane drops means it stays on the eye surface for longer than a standard watery drop. It is commonly sold in a 10ml bottle in Malaysia.

The gel’s polyethylene glycol component acts as a lubricant that coats and moistens the surface of the eye, while the gelling agent thickens the formulation so that it clings to the eye surface for longer than a typical watery drop. Together, these components form a more substantial, temporary protective film over the cornea and conjunctiva, cushioning the eye during blinking and slowing tear evaporation — with the trade-off of causing more noticeable, brief blurring immediately after use than a thinner drop.

Wash your hands before use, and shake the bottle well if the label instructs you to do so. Tilt your head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid, and apply 1-2 drops into the eye without letting the bottle tip touch the eye or any other surface. Blink a few times to help spread the gel evenly across the eye surface.

This gel is often formulated with overnight or extended-wear use in mind, so applying it just before sleep is a common approach. Contact lens wearers should remove their lenses before application and wait at least 10-15 minutes before reinserting them, and should space this gel at least 5-10 minutes apart from any other eye drops used.

The typical adult dose is 1-2 drops of gel instilled into the affected eye(s) as needed, or as directed by a healthcare provider; because of its thicker consistency, many people prefer to use it before bed or during periods when clear vision is less critical. If your symptoms persist, worsen, or you find you need to use it much more frequently than advised, stop self-treating and consult a doctor, optometrist, or pharmacist for further assessment.

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. As with other multi-dose lubricant eye gels, check your specific pack for the manufacturer’s stated in-use period after first opening, and discard the bottle once that period has passed, even if the overall expiry date has not yet been reached; if this is not clearly printed on your pack, ask your pharmacist for guidance.

Store below 25-30°C (room temperature) in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use, and keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use the gel if it has changed colour, become unusually cloudy, or shows signs of contamination.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women can generally use topical lubricant eye gels, as systemic absorption is minimal, but should check with a pharmacist if concerned, and use in young children should be supervised by an adult.
