Overview

Neuromethyn 500mcg Capsule is an oral vitamin B12 product in which each capsule provides 500mcg of mecobalamin, also known as methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin is one of the two metabolically active forms of vitamin B12 in the human body, together with adenosylcobalamin. It differs from cyanocobalamin, the form most often found in general multivitamins, which the body must first convert into the active forms. The capsule is designed to be swallowed whole with water.

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient involved in normal red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis and the normal function of the nervous system. Because natural sources of vitamin B12 are mainly animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy, people following vegetarian or vegan diets may have a low intake. Older adults, people with reduced stomach acid, people who have had stomach or weight-loss surgery, and people taking metformin or acid-reducing medicines for long periods are also more likely to have low vitamin B12 levels.

The 500mcg strength is far above the daily requirement for vitamin B12, because only a small proportion of a large oral dose is absorbed once the body’s intrinsic-factor absorption pathway is saturated. Persistent numbness, tingling, weakness or unexplained tiredness can have many causes, so these symptoms should be assessed by a doctor rather than self-treated with a supplement. Neuromethyn 500mcg Capsule is listed in a pack of 10 capsules; please refer to the product label and packaging for the full product information.

Directions for Use

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Taking it with or after a meal may help with stomach comfort. Take it at about the same time each day so that it is easier to remember, and follow the directions on the product label or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage

Adults: The usual serving is one capsule (500mcg mecobalamin) daily, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Always follow the dosage stated on the product label or package insert, as your doctor may recommend a different dose depending on your needs.

Do not take more than the recommended amount unless advised by a healthcare professional. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember on the same day; do not take two doses to make up for a missed one. Use in children only on the advice of a doctor or pharmacist.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Methylcobalamin is sensitive to light, so keep the capsules in their original packaging until use. Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild stomach upset, nausea or loss of appetite.
  • Common: Headache or mild dizziness.
  • Uncommon: Mild diarrhoea or skin rash.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, hives or difficulty breathing – stop taking it and seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mecobalamin (methylcobalamin), cobalt, other forms of vitamin B12 or any other ingredient of the capsule.
  • Not intended as a substitute for vitamin B12 injections or other treatment prescribed by your doctor for diagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency or pernicious anaemia.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Metformin: Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 absorption and blood levels; continue metformin as prescribed and discuss B12 monitoring with your doctor.
  • Acid-reducing medicines: Proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole) and H2 blockers taken long term can reduce absorption of vitamin B12 from food.
  • Other B12-containing products: Check multivitamins and B-complex products you already take to avoid unnecessary duplication.
  • Alcohol: Heavy, regular alcohol intake can affect nutrient absorption and nerve health; limit alcohol.
  • No clinically significant food interactions are known; it can be taken with or without meals.

Quick Tips

  • Take the capsule at the same time every day to build a consistent routine.
  • Keep the capsules in their original pack, away from light, until you are ready to take them.
  • If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether your vitamin B12 intake is adequate.
  • If you take metformin or an acid-reducing medicine long term, ask your doctor whether your B12 level should be checked.
  • See a doctor for numbness, tingling, weakness or balance problems rather than relying on a supplement alone.
  • Bring the pack with you when you see your doctor or pharmacist so they can check it against your other medicines.
