Wockhardt Uticor Sore Throat Spray

Wockhardt Uticor Sore Throat Spray is an over-the-counter oromucosal spray from Wockhardt, supplied in a 30ml bottle for topical application to the mouth and throat. Its formulation combines benzocaine, a local anaesthetic, with glycerin, a soothing and moisturising agent, delivered as a fine metered mist aimed at the back of the throat.

The product is registered for sale in Malaysia as an OTC preparation and does not require a doctor’s prescription. It is presented in a compact spray bottle that is easy to carry, and differs from lozenge- or gargle-based throat products in that it delivers a targeted spray directly onto the mucosal surface.

Remove the cap and, before first use, prime the pump by spraying a few times into the air until an even mist is produced. Open the mouth, aim the nozzle towards the back of the throat, and press down to release the spray. Try not to swallow immediately; allow the spray to remain in contact with the throat for a few seconds before swallowing. Wipe the nozzle clean after use and replace the cap tightly.

Adults and children aged 6 years and above: 1 to 2 sprays onto the affected area of the throat, up to 4 times in 24 hours, leaving at least 2 to 3 hours between applications. Do not exceed 4 applications in a 24-hour period. Use in children under 6 years should only be under the guidance of a healthcare professional. If a missed application occurs, simply resume at the next scheduled time rather than doubling up.

Use before the expiry date printed on the carton and bottle. Once opened, use within the period stated on the packaging, as in-use stability can vary slightly by batch.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle upright with the cap firmly closed between uses, and keep out of reach and sight of children.

• Common: Mild tingling or numbness in the mouth or throat shortly after spraying.
• Common: Temporary dryness of the mouth or throat.
• Common: A brief stinging or warm sensation at the site of application.
• Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, which need immediate medical attention.
• Serious: A rare blood condition called methaemoglobinaemia (bluish-coloured skin, unusual tiredness, or shortness of breath) has been linked to benzocaine-containing products and needs urgent medical care.

• Known hypersensitivity to benzocaine, other local anaesthetics, or any other ingredient in the formulation.
• Not recommended for children under 6 years unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Not for use on broken skin or open wounds inside the mouth or throat.

• Using this spray together with other throat lozenges, gargles or sprays that also contain a local anaesthetic may increase the total amount of benzocaine absorbed; avoid combining several benzocaine-containing products at the same time.
• No clinically significant food interactions have been reported for topical benzocaine/glycerin throat sprays.
• Tell your pharmacist about all other medicines and oral products you are using before combining them with this spray.

• Prime the pump with a few test sprays before the very first use.
• Avoid eating or drinking for a few minutes right after each spray.
• Keep the spray tip clean and wipe it after use to prevent blockage.
• Do not share your spray bottle with other people.
• Check the expiry date before each use.
• Keep the bottle away from heat and direct sunlight.

Precautions: Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and check with a doctor or pharmacist first. Avoid spraying near the eyes. The temporary numbness in the throat may affect swallowing for a short while, so take care when eating or drinking soon after use, particularly with young children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if throat discomfort lasts more than 2 to 3 days, is accompanied by a high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a skin rash, or if symptoms worsen despite regular use.
