Overview

Forxiga 10mg Tablet contains dapagliflozin 10mg, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and also used to reduce the risk of hospitalisation from heart failure and to slow progression of certain chronic kidney disease, as determined by your doctor.

Dapagliflozin works in the kidneys by blocking the SGLT2 protein that normally reabsorbs glucose back into the bloodstream, causing excess glucose to be removed from the body through urine instead. This lowers blood glucose independently of insulin and also produces mild fluid and sodium loss that can benefit heart failure and blood pressure.

How it Works

Dapagliflozin selectively inhibits SGLT2 in the kidney’s proximal tubule, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion, which lowers blood glucose without directly affecting insulin secretion. This mechanism also reduces fluid volume and blood pressure slightly, contributing to its benefits in heart failure and chronic kidney disease.

Directions for Use

Take Forxiga 10mg Tablet once daily in the morning, with or without food, and swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Maintain adequate fluid intake, particularly in hot weather or if you are unwell, since this medicine increases urination and fluid loss.

Dosage

The usual dose of Forxiga 10mg Tablet is 10mg once daily, taken in the morning, regardless of meals. Your doctor will determine whether this medicine is used alone or together with other diabetes, heart failure, or kidney medicines, and will individualise your dose and monitoring based on your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Forxiga 10mg Tablet used for?

Forxiga 10mg Tablet is used to improve blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and, in some patients, to reduce heart failure hospitalisation risk or slow chronic kidney disease progression. Your doctor will confirm the specific reason it has been prescribed for you.

Why does this medicine cause more urination?

Dapagliflozin works by removing extra glucose through the urine, which naturally increases urine output; this is expected and not usually a cause for concern as long as you stay well hydrated.

Can this medicine cause a serious complication even with normal blood sugar?

Yes, in rare cases SGLT2 inhibitors like dapagliflozin can cause diabetic ketoacidosis even when blood glucose is not very high, so seek urgent care for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or unusual tiredness.

Should I stop this medicine before surgery?

Your doctor may advise temporarily stopping this medicine before planned surgery or during serious illness to reduce the risk of ketoacidosis – always follow your doctor’s specific instructions.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Forxiga 10mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
