Overview

Live-well Magnesium 350mg Tablet is a single-mineral magnesium supplement from the Live-well brand, supplied as oral tablets in a pack of 60. Each tablet is labelled as providing 350mg of magnesium and is intended to be taken once daily after a meal. As the product is a single-nutrient formula, it is a straightforward option for adults whose doctor or pharmacist has suggested additional magnesium, without the other vitamins and minerals found in a multivitamin.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that acts as a co-factor for hundreds of enzyme systems in the body. It contributes to normal muscle and nerve function, normal energy-yielding metabolism, protein synthesis and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. The recommended dietary allowance for adults is roughly 310–420mg a day depending on age and sex, and most of this is expected to come from foods such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.

The 350mg strength is relatively high: it matches the tolerable upper intake level of 350mg per day set for magnesium from supplements in adults (this limit does not include magnesium from food). This is why only one tablet a day should be taken, and why people taking other magnesium-containing products, such as antacids, laxatives or multivitamins, should check their total intake. The magnesium salt used (for example magnesium oxide) and whether 350mg refers to elemental magnesium should be confirmed on the product label, as this affects absorption and stomach tolerance.

Directions for Use

Swallow one tablet whole with a glass of water after food. Taking magnesium after a meal can help reduce the chance of stomach upset or loose stools.

If you take antibiotics, osteoporosis medicines (bisphosphonates) or thyroid medicine, take Live-well Magnesium at a different time of day as advised in the interactions section or by your pharmacist.

Dosage

Adults: One tablet daily, preferably after a meal, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not exceed one tablet a day. A single tablet already reaches the 350mg daily upper limit for magnesium from supplements in adults, so avoid adding other magnesium-containing supplements, antacids or laxatives unless your doctor advises it. This product is not intended for children unless recommended by a doctor.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed after use and keep out of reach of children. Refer to the product label for any specific storage temperature.

Side Effects

  • Common: Loose stools or diarrhoea — magnesium oxide, carbonate, chloride and gluconate forms are the ones most often linked to this effect.
  • Common: Nausea, bloating, abdominal cramping or stomach upset, especially if taken on an empty stomach.
  • Serious (rare): Signs of excess magnesium, such as low blood pressure, facial flushing, nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat or difficulty breathing — mainly in people with reduced kidney function or very high intakes. Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Serious (rare): Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing — stop taking and seek medical help.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to magnesium or any other ingredient in the tablet.
  • Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure, unless specifically advised and monitored by a doctor, because the kidneys may not be able to remove excess magnesium.
  • Children, unless recommended by a doctor — the 350mg strength exceeds the supplemental upper limit for children under 9 years.
  • Known high blood magnesium levels.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (e.g. doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin): magnesium can bind to these antibiotics and reduce their absorption — take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4–6 hours after, this supplement.
  • Oral bisphosphonates (e.g. alendronate): magnesium can reduce their absorption — separate doses by at least 2 hours.
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid medicine): minerals such as magnesium can reduce its absorption — take levothyroxine on an empty stomach and keep magnesium at a well-separated time (commonly at least 4 hours apart), as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Diuretics: loop and thiazide diuretics can increase magnesium loss, while potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g. spironolactone, amiloride) reduce magnesium excretion and may raise levels — inform your doctor before use.
  • Long-term proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole): prolonged use can lower magnesium levels; check with your doctor whether monitoring or supplementation is appropriate.
  • Other magnesium sources: antacids, laxatives and multivitamins may also contain magnesium — avoid exceeding the daily supplemental limit.

Quick Tips

  • Take your tablet after a meal at roughly the same time each day to improve stomach tolerance and consistency.
  • Stick to one tablet a day — this single tablet already meets the adult upper limit for supplemental magnesium.
  • Check other products you use, such as antacids, laxatives and multivitamins, for hidden magnesium.
  • Plan your timing around antibiotics, bisphosphonates and thyroid medicine so they are not taken together.
  • Continue to include magnesium-rich foods such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains in your diet.
  • Speak to your doctor before starting if you have kidney disease or take diuretics or long-term acid-reducing medicines.

Relevant Information

Precautions: One tablet provides 350mg of magnesium, which equals the adult upper limit for magnesium from supplements. Avoid combining it with other magnesium-containing supplements, antacids or laxatives unless advised. People with kidney disease or heart rhythm problems, those taking diuretics, long-term proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics, bisphosphonates or levothyroxine, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop taking the supplement and seek medical attention promptly if you experience dizziness or fainting, marked muscle weakness, unusual drowsiness, irregular heartbeat or difficulty breathing. See a pharmacist if diarrhoea or stomach upset persists, and speak to your doctor if you have ongoing muscle cramps, numbness or palpitations, as these symptoms should be properly assessed rather than self-treated.
