Overview

Postinor-2 0.75mg Tablet is a tablet with Levonorgestrel 0.75mg per tablet declared as its active content. It is supplied in pack sizes of 20s, 2s and 2s x3.

This is a non-prescription product and can be purchased without a prescription. Only product, safety and handling details are published on this page.

An online consultation with a DoctorOnCall doctor or pharmacist is available for this product, and a registered pharmacist reviews each order before dispatch to Malaysia or Singapore. Follow the directions on the label and on the leaflet inside the pack.

Directions for Use

Postinor-2 0.75mg Tablet contains two tablets: the first tablet should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 72 hours, as effectiveness decreases the longer treatment is delayed, and the second tablet should be taken 12 hours after the first, exactly as stated on the product label. If vomiting occurs within two to three hours of taking a tablet, contact a pharmacist, as a replacement dose may be needed.

Dosage

The standard course of Postinor-2 is two tablets of levonorgestrel 0.75mg taken 12 hours apart, starting as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Do not take more than the two tablets provided in one pack for a single episode, and do not use it as a routine or repeated form of contraception; if you need emergency contraception again within the same cycle, seek pharmacist or doctor advice first.

Shelf Life

Postinor-2 0.75mg Tablet has a shelf life of approximately 36 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and unopened. Always check the expiry date printed on the packaging before use, and do not use the tablets beyond this date.

Storage Instructions

Store Postinor-2 0.75mg Tablet below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, in its original packaging until ready for use. Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Irregular menstruation or spotting
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Breast tenderness or discomfort
  • Abdominal pain or cramps

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any other ingredient in the tablet
  • Known or suspected existing pregnancy (it will not terminate an existing pregnancy)
  • Severe liver disease
  • Not intended for use as a regular ongoing method of contraception
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Certain enzyme-inducing medicines, such as some anti-epileptic drugs, rifampicin, and the herbal supplement St John’s Wort, may reduce the effectiveness of levonorgestrel
  • Taking this tablet may temporarily affect the reliability of hormonal contraceptives used afterward in the same cycle, so barrier protection such as condoms is recommended until your next period
  • Vomiting or severe diarrhoea within a few hours of taking a dose may reduce absorption, and a replacement dose may be needed – seek pharmacist advice if this happens

Quick Tips

  • Take the first tablet as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse – do not wait, as effectiveness reduces with delay
  • Set a reminder to take the second tablet exactly 12 hours after the first
  • Use condoms for the rest of your cycle, as this medicine does not provide ongoing contraceptive protection
  • See a doctor if your next period is more than seven days late, unusually light, or if you have concerns about pregnancy
  • Speak to a pharmacist about starting or continuing a regular contraceptive method to avoid relying on emergency contraception
  • Remember that Postinor-2 does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

Relevant Information

Postinor-2 0.75mg Tablet is intended strictly as a backup, emergency measure and works best the sooner it is taken after unprotected intercourse – it is not meant to replace regular contraception such as the combined pill, progestogen-only pill, injectables, implants, or condoms used consistently. If emergency contraception is needed repeatedly, speak with a pharmacist or doctor about a more reliable, ongoing contraceptive option that better suits your needs.
