Singulair 5mg Tablet

Singulair 5mg Tablet (chewable) contains Montelukast 5mg, a leukotriene receptor antagonist originally developed by Merck, used for the prophylaxis (prevention) and long-term management of asthma, including exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and for the relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis. This 5mg chewable strength is specifically formulated for pediatric patients, typically children aged 6 to 14 years.

Singulair 5mg Tablet is a prescription-only medicine in Malaysia. It should only be given to a child after an online consultation and prescription from a registered doctor through DoctorOnCall, who will confirm the diagnosis and appropriate dosing for the child’s age and weight.

Montelukast works by selectively blocking the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1), preventing leukotrienes (inflammatory chemicals released during allergic and asthmatic responses) from causing airway constriction, mucus production, and inflammation. This helps reduce the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms and allergic rhinitis symptoms when taken regularly.

Singulair 5mg Tablet should be chewed thoroughly and not swallowed whole, usually given once daily in the evening, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your child’s doctor. For asthma prevention, it should be taken regularly even when your child feels well, as it is not intended for relief of an acute asthma attack.

The usual prescribed dose for children aged 6 to 14 years is one 5mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening. Your doctor will confirm the correct dose based on your child’s age and condition; do not adjust the dose without medical advice, and do not use this strength in children younger than 6 years without a doctor’s specific instruction.

Singulair 5mg Tablet is typically stable for up to 24 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly and unopened. Always check the expiry date printed on the packaging before use.

Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, in the original blister packaging. Keep out of reach of children, even though the tablet is chewable and child-friendly in taste.

• Known hypersensitivity to montelukast or any component of the tablet
• Not intended to treat acute asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm
• Not a substitute for inhaled or oral corticosteroids unless directed by a doctor
• Use with caution in children with a history of neuropsychiatric symptoms

• Phenobarbital and rifampicin — may reduce montelukast blood levels and effectiveness
• Other asthma medicines, including inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators — montelukast is often used alongside these, but do not stop other prescribed asthma medicines without your doctor’s advice
• Inform your doctor of all other medicines your child is taking

• Chew the tablet thoroughly; do not swallow whole
• Give the dose in the evening as prescribed, even when your child has no symptoms
• Do not use this product to treat a sudden asthma attack — use the prescribed rescue inhaler instead
• Watch for any mood, behaviour, or sleep changes and report them to your doctor
• Continue other prescribed asthma medicines unless your doctor advises a change

Montelukast 5mg chewable tablets are specifically formulated for children aged 6 to 14 years and should not be confused with the 4mg strength intended for younger children aged 2 to 5 years, or the 10mg film-coated tablet for adults. Parents should ensure the correct strength is used for their child’s age group and should follow up with the prescribing doctor periodically to review asthma or allergy control and monitor for any behavioural side effects.
