Overview

Temodal 100mg Capsule contains temozolomide 100mg, an oral alkylating chemotherapy medicine used to treat certain brain tumours, including newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme (given together with radiotherapy and then alone) and malignant glioma (such as glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma) that has recurred or progressed after standard treatment.

Temozolomide is a prodrug that, once absorbed, converts spontaneously at physiological pH into an active alkylating compound. This active compound adds alkyl groups to DNA within rapidly dividing cancer cells, damaging the DNA and triggering cancer cell death.

How it Works

Temozolomide is converted in the body into an active alkylating agent that methylates DNA at specific sites, particularly the O6 position of guanine. This DNA damage overwhelms the cancer cell’s repair mechanisms, triggering cell cycle arrest and programmed cell death (apoptosis) in rapidly dividing tumour cells.

Directions for Use

Take Temodal 100mg Capsule on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal, at the same time each day, to ensure consistent absorption. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water – do not open, chew, or crush the capsule, as the contents can be irritant and hazardous if inhaled or if it contacts the skin or mucous membranes. An anti-sickness (anti-emetic) medicine is usually taken before each dose, as prescribed by your oncologist.

Dosage

Dosing is individualised based on body surface area, treatment phase (concomitant with radiotherapy versus maintenance cycles), and blood test results, and must only be determined and adjusted by your treating oncologist. Doses are typically taken once daily for a set number of days per treatment cycle.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Quick Tips

  • Take this medicine on an empty stomach at the same time each day, exactly as scheduled by your oncologist

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to treat certain brain tumours, including newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme and recurrent malignant glioma, usually as part of a treatment plan that also involves radiotherapy or surgery.

How does temozolomide work?

It converts in the body into an active compound that damages the DNA of rapidly dividing cancer cells, causing them to die.

Why do I need blood tests so often during treatment?

Temozolomide can lower your blood cell counts. Regular blood tests let your oncologist confirm it is safe to continue or adjust your dose.

Can I open or crush the capsule if I have trouble swallowing it?

No. The capsule must be swallowed whole. Opening, chewing, or crushing it can expose you to hazardous contents.

What are the common side effects?

Will I be given medicine to prevent nausea?

Yes, your oncologist will usually prescribe an anti-sickness medicine to take before each dose.

Can I become pregnant or father a child while on this medicine?

This medicine can seriously harm a developing baby. Effective contraception is essential during treatment and for a period afterwards – discuss the specifics with your doctor.
