Overview

Verahexal 120mg Tablet contains verapamil 120mg, a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), angina (chest pain), and certain fast heart rhythms such as supraventricular arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation with rapid heart rate.

Verapamil works by blocking calcium channels in both the heart muscle and blood vessel walls. In the heart, this slows electrical conduction through the AV node, helping control fast or irregular heart rhythms, while in blood vessels it causes relaxation and widening, lowering blood pressure and easing angina.

How it Works

Verapamil blocks L-type calcium channels in cardiac and vascular smooth muscle. Unlike dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (such as amlodipine), verapamil has significant direct effects on the heart itself, slowing conduction through the AV node (useful in supraventricular arrhythmias) and reducing the heart’s contractility and oxygen demand (useful in angina), in addition to relaxing blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

Directions for Use

Take Verahexal 120mg Tablet with food to reduce stomach upset, swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water – do not crush or chew it if it is a sustained-release formulation, as this can alter how the medicine is released. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Dosage

The usual dose of Verahexal 120mg Tablet depends on the condition being treated and is individualised by your doctor, typically starting at a lower dose and adjusted based on your blood pressure, heart rate, or symptom response. Always take exactly as prescribed.

Shelf Life

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Verahexal 120mg Tablet used for?

Verahexal 120mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and certain fast or irregular heart rhythms such as supraventricular arrhythmias.

Why does this medicine cause constipation?

Verapamil relaxes smooth muscle throughout the body, including in the intestines, which can slow bowel movement and lead to constipation. Increasing fibre and fluid intake can help; speak to your doctor if it persists or becomes severe.

Can I take this medicine together with a beta-blocker?

Combining verapamil with a beta-blocker requires caution and close monitoring by your doctor, as both medicines slow the heart’s electrical conduction and heart rate, and combining them can increase the risk of a dangerously slow heartbeat.

Why should I avoid grapefruit juice with this medicine?

Grapefruit juice can significantly increase verapamil levels in the blood by affecting how the liver breaks it down, increasing the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure and dizziness.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Verahexal 120mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
