Overview

Xeloda 500mg Tablet contains capecitabine, an oral chemotherapy medicine (a fluoropyrimidine) prescribed and monitored by an oncology specialist to treat certain cancers, including colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, and breast cancer.

Capecitabine is converted in the body into 5-fluorouracil, an active chemotherapy compound that interferes with the ability of cancer cells to build and repair their DNA, which stops the cancer cells from dividing and leads to their death.

How it Works

Xeloda is a prodrug that is converted step by step, with the final conversion happening preferentially inside tumour cells, into 5-fluorouracil. This active compound blocks an enzyme cancer cells need to make DNA and gets incorporated into RNA and DNA itself, both of which stop cancer cells from dividing and cause them to die.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with water within 30 minutes after a meal, exactly as scheduled by your oncology team – do not alter the dose or schedule without their guidance.

Dosage

The dose is calculated by the treating oncologist based on body surface area, the cancer being treated, and how well the treatment is tolerated, typically given in cycles of twice-daily dosing followed by a rest period.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Xeloda used for?

Xeloda contains capecitabine, an oral chemotherapy medicine used to treat certain colorectal, gastric, and breast cancers.

How does Xeloda work against cancer?

It is converted in the body, preferentially within tumour tissue, into an active compound that stops cancer cells from making DNA and dividing.

What is hand-foot syndrome and why does this medicine cause it?

It is redness, swelling, and peeling of the palms and soles caused by the medicine’s effect on skin cells; report it early to your care team so your dose can be adjusted if needed.

Can I take this medicine on an empty stomach?

No, take it within 30 minutes after a meal, as this helps with absorption and tolerability.

Why can’t I take folic acid supplements while on this medicine?

Folic acid and folinic acid can increase the toxicity of capecitabine unless your oncology team is specifically managing this combination.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Do not take a missed dose if it is close to your next one – contact your oncology team for specific guidance rather than doubling up.

Why do I need frequent blood tests during treatment?

Capecitabine can lower blood cell counts and affect organ function, so regular blood tests help your care team monitor for these effects.
