COVID-19 Testing
COVID-19 Test Kits, RTK-Ag and PCR Compared
There are three main ways to check for a current COVID-19 infection. They differ in sensitivity, who collects the sample and how fast you get the result. Antibody tests only show past infection or vaccination.
| Test | Sample | Result time | Accuracy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTK-Ag self-test kit | Nasal or saliva swab taken at home | 15–20 min | Good when you have symptoms; can miss early or mild infection | Quick checks at home, before visiting elderly family, after close contact |
| RTK-Ag professional test | Nasal or nasopharyngeal swab by a trained health worker | 15–30 min | Similar to self-test, with fewer sampling errors | Clinic visits, workplace screening, events |
| RT-PCR test | Nasopharyngeal or throat swab, processed in a lab | 24–48 hrs | Most sensitive; the reference test for diagnosis | Confirming a result, travel or procedure requirements, high-risk patients |
| Antibody (serology) | Blood sample | 1–2 days | Shows past infection or vaccine response only | Specific medical needs, not diagnosis |
How to use a self-test kit
- Check the kit. Use a kit approved by the Medical Device Authority (MDA) and within its expiry date. Steps differ between brands, so read the leaflet first.
- Collect the sample. Wash your hands, then swab both nostrils or collect saliva exactly as shown.
- Add the drops and wait. Mix the swab in the buffer, add the drops to the cassette and start a timer.
- Read on time. Usually 15–20 minutes. A faint test line still counts as positive.
- Act on the result. Positive: rest, stay away from others and follow Ministry of Health advice. Negative with symptoms: test again in 24–48 hours.
Testing at home, at a clinic or at work
Self-test kits let you test at home in minutes. If you prefer a health worker to take the swab, many clinics offer walk-in RTK-Ag and RT-PCR testing, and some offer home sampling for people who cannot travel. Companies can also arrange on-site testing so staff are tested in one session at the office or factory.
Get medical help straight away if you have
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain or pressure that does not go away
- Confusion, difficulty staying awake, or bluish lips or face
Call 999 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a test result.
COVID-19 Vaccination
COVID-19 Vaccines and Boosters
Vaccination lowers the risk of severe illness, hospital admission and death from COVID-19. Protection fades over time and the virus keeps changing, so updated doses now focus on people at higher risk.
Who benefits most
- Adults aged 60 and above
- People with heart disease, diabetes, kidney or lung disease
- People with weak immunity
- Pregnant women
- Healthcare and frontline workers
Vaccines used in Malaysia
Under the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK), Malaysia used Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty), Sinovac (CoronaVac), AstraZeneca and CanSino for primary doses and boosters. Available vaccines and schedules change as new versions are approved, so follow the latest Ministry of Health guidance.
Foreigners & home vaccination
Foreign residents, expatriates and workers in Malaysia can be vaccinated at participating private clinics. Some providers also vaccinate elderly or bedridden patients at home.

Travel Vaccination
Umrah and Hajj Vaccination
Pilgrims gather in very large crowds, where infections spread easily. Saudi Arabia sets vaccine requirements for pilgrims, and doctors recommend extra protection for older travellers and people with chronic illness.
| Vaccine | Status | When to take it | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meningococcal ACWY | Required | At least 10 days before arriving in Saudi Arabia | Protects against meningitis outbreaks linked to mass gatherings; proof is checked on entry |
| Influenza | Recommended | About 2 weeks before travel | Flu spreads fast in crowds and can be severe in older pilgrims |
| Pneumococcal | Recommended for 60+ and high-risk | Before travel, as advised by your doctor | Lowers the risk of pneumonia |
| COVID-19 | Check current rules | Per the latest Saudi and MOH guidance | Lowers the risk of severe illness during the trip |
Saudi entry requirements can change each season. Confirm them with your travel agent or Lembaga Tabung Haji before you travel. Find a clinic in vaccination services.
Health Screening
What a Health Screening Checks
Regular screening finds problems like high blood sugar, high cholesterol and kidney disease early, often before you feel unwell. Most adults should screen once a year from age 30, or earlier with a family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer.
| Test | What it checks | Basic | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full blood count | Anaemia, infection, blood disorders | ✓ | ✓ |
| Fasting glucose / HbA1c | Diabetes and pre-diabetes | ✓ | ✓ |
| Lipid profile | Cholesterol and heart disease risk | ✓ | ✓ |
| Kidney function | Creatinine, urea, electrolytes | ✓ | ✓ |
| Liver function | Liver enzymes, fatty liver | ✓ | ✓ |
| Urine test (FEME) | Kidney and urinary tract problems | ✓ | ✓ |
| Thyroid function | Over- or under-active thyroid | – | ✓ |
| Tumour markers & ECG | Selected cancer markers, heart rhythm | – | ✓ |
Before your screening
- Fast for 8–10 hours if your package includes glucose or cholesterol (plain water is fine)
- Bring a list of your current medicines and past results
- Wear a short-sleeved top for the blood test
After your results
Go through your report with a doctor, especially results marked high or low. One abnormal value is common and does not always mean disease, but it may need a repeat test or follow-up.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a COVID-19 self-test kit as accurate as a PCR test?
No. RT-PCR is the most sensitive test. Antigen self-tests are fast and reliable when you have symptoms, but can miss early or mild infections. If a self-test is negative and you still have symptoms, test again 24 to 48 hours later or see a doctor.
When should I take a COVID-19 test?
Test when you have symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or loss of smell, or 3 to 5 days after close contact with someone who has COVID-19. Test again if the first result is negative and symptoms continue.
Who should get an updated COVID-19 vaccine?
Adults aged 60 and above, people with chronic illnesses or weak immunity, pregnant women and frontline workers benefit most. Follow the latest Ministry of Health Malaysia advice and ask a doctor about timing.
Which vaccines do I need for Umrah or Hajj?
The meningococcal ACWY vaccine is required by Saudi Arabia for pilgrims and must be taken at least 10 days before arrival. Influenza vaccination is strongly recommended, and older pilgrims should ask about pneumococcal vaccine. Check the latest Saudi requirements before you travel.
How often should I do a health screening?
Most adults should screen once a year from age 30, or earlier if they have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or cancer. Your doctor may advise more frequent checks if results are abnormal.
Can my company arrange COVID-19 testing or health screening at the office?
Yes. DoctorOnCall Corporate arranges on-site testing, vaccination and health screening for offices and factories across Malaysia.
