Overview

Eliquis 5mg Tablet contains apixaban 5mg, a direct oral anticoagulant (blood thinner) that inhibits factor Xa. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm), and to treat or prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), including after certain hip or knee replacement surgeries.

Apixaban works by directly blocking factor Xa, a key protein in the blood clotting cascade. By inhibiting factor Xa, it reduces the production of thrombin, slowing down clot formation and lowering the risk of dangerous blood clots.

How it Works

Apixaban selectively and reversibly inhibits both free and clot-bound factor Xa, interrupting the coagulation cascade at a key step. This reduces thrombin generation and clot formation without requiring the routine blood-clotting (INR) monitoring associated with older anticoagulants such as warfarin.

Directions for Use

Take Eliquis 5mg Tablet at the same times each day, approximately 12 hours apart, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water; do not skip doses, as missed doses increase your risk of stroke or clotting. If you have a procedure or dental surgery planned, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking apixaban well in advance, as it may need to be temporarily stopped under medical supervision.

Dosage

The usual dose of Eliquis 5mg Tablet for atrial fibrillation is 5mg twice daily, though your doctor may prescribe a reduced dose of 2.5mg twice daily if you meet certain criteria (such as advanced age, low body weight, or reduced kidney function). Dosing for DVT/PE treatment or prevention follows a different, doctor-directed schedule. This is a high-risk medicine that must never be started, stopped, or adjusted without your doctor’s explicit instruction.

Shelf Life

  • Conditions or recent events with a significant risk of major bleeding, as assessed by your doctor

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (e.g. warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) markedly increase bleeding risk if combined without specific medical direction
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac) increase the risk of bleeding, especially gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Strong combined inhibitors of CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein (e.g. ketoconazole, ritonavir) can raise apixaban blood levels
  • Strong inducers of CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein (e.g. rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John’s Wort) can reduce apixaban’s effectiveness

Quick Tips

  • Never stop or skip this medicine on your own – stopping suddenly can significantly increase your risk of stroke or blood clots
  • Carry an anticoagulant alert card or inform any doctor, dentist, or pharmacist that you are on apixaban before any procedure
  • Watch for and promptly report unusual bruising, bleeding, or blood in urine/stool
  • Take extra care to avoid injury during activities such as shaving, using sharp tools, or contact sports

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Eliquis 5mg Tablet used for?

Eliquis 5mg Tablet is a blood thinner used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation, and to treat or prevent blood clots such as DVT and PE.

Do I need regular blood tests while taking this medicine?

Unlike warfarin, apixaban does not usually require routine INR monitoring, but your doctor may still check your kidney function and blood counts periodically.

What should I do if I have unusual bleeding or bruising?

Contact your doctor promptly if you notice unusual bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts, blood in your urine or stool, or very heavy menstrual bleeding, as these may signal a bleeding problem.

Can I take painkillers like ibuprofen with this medicine?

You should avoid NSAIDs such as ibuprofen unless your doctor specifically approves them, as combining them with apixaban increases your bleeding risk. Paracetamol is generally a safer option – confirm with your doctor or pharmacist.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Eliquis 5mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and continue your normal twice-daily schedule – do not take a double dose.
