Overview

Reparil Gel-N is a topical gel product from the Reparil range, formulated with two active ingredients: Aescin, a compound derived from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) extract, and Diethylamine salicylate, a salicylate compound formulated for external application. Each gram of the gel contains 10 mg of Aescin and 50 mg of Diethylamine salicylate, suspended in a clear, non-greasy gel base that is designed to spread easily and absorb into the skin without leaving a visible residue.

The gel base is water-based rather than oil-based, which gives it a light texture on the skin and allows it to be massaged in without the heavy, greasy feel associated with some ointment-type topical products. Reparil Gel-N is sold in Malaysia as an over-the-counter item in a 40g tube, making it suitable for regular use at home or when travelling.

Reparil Gel-N sits alongside Reparil Ice Spray in the same product family, though the two differ in both active ingredients and format: the gel combines Aescin and Diethylamine salicylate in a rub-in gel base, while the spray is built around Levomenthol in an aerosol format that does not require manual application. The clear gel formulation of Reparil Gel-N also means it does not leave a visible white residue or strong colour on the skin after it has been absorbed.

Directions for Use

Squeeze a small amount of gel from the tube and apply a thin layer to the intended area of skin. Gently massage the gel into the skin using light, circular motions until it is fully absorbed and no longer visible on the surface.

Wash your hands thoroughly after application unless the hands themselves are the area being treated. Avoid applying the gel to the eyes, mouth, nose, broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes, and do not cover the treated area with an airtight or occlusive dressing unless advised to do so by a healthcare provider.

Dosage

For adults, Reparil Gel-N is generally applied 2 to 3 times a day to the intended area of skin, using a thin layer each time, or as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. There is no need to apply a thick layer, as a thin, evenly spread layer is sufficient for the gel to be absorbed.

Do not apply the gel more often than directed on the packaging or by a pharmacist. This product is intended for short-term, as-needed external use; if you find you need to use it continuously for more than a few days, or if the treated skin becomes irritated, stop use and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Reparil Gel-N below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the tube tightly closed after each use to prevent the gel from drying out.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not store the product in a bathroom cabinet exposed to high humidity or in a car where temperatures can rise significantly.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, temporary redness at the site of application.
  • Common: A warm or tingling sensation on the skin shortly after applying the gel.
  • Common: Slight itchiness at the application site, which usually settles without needing to stop the product.
  • Serious: Signs of an allergic skin reaction, such as a spreading rash, hives, blistering, or marked swelling, which require you to stop use immediately and seek medical attention.
  • Serious: Signs of salicylate sensitivity, such as unexplained wheezing or skin reaction shortly after application in individuals with a known aspirin or salicylate allergy, which require prompt medical review.

Contraindications

  • Do not use on broken, grazed, or actively bleeding skin, or over open wounds.
  • Do not use in individuals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to Aescin, horse chestnut extract, Diethylamine salicylate, aspirin, or other salicylates.
  • Do not apply to the eyes, mouth, nose, genital area, or other mucous membranes.
  • Do not use under an airtight or occlusive dressing unless specifically instructed by a healthcare provider.
  • Use with caution in children, and seek pharmacist advice before use in young children, the elderly, or individuals with known bleeding disorders, given the salicylate content.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Because Diethylamine salicylate is a salicylate compound, using large amounts of Reparil Gel-N over a wide area of skin at the same time as oral salicylate medicines, such as aspirin, may theoretically increase overall salicylate exposure; speak with a pharmacist if you are taking regular oral aspirin or other salicylate medicines.
  • Using Reparil Gel-N at the same time as other topical products containing salicylates, menthol, or other counter-irritant ingredients on the same area of skin is not recommended, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation.
  • No specific food interactions are known for this topical product, as it is applied to the skin rather than taken by mouth.
  • If you are on blood-thinning medicine or have a known bleeding disorder, check with a doctor or pharmacist before regular use of this product, given its salicylate content.

Quick Tips

  • Squeeze the tube from the bottom upward to use the gel efficiently and avoid air pockets forming inside.
  • Replace the cap firmly after each use to prevent the gel from drying out at the tube opening.
  • Apply the gel with clean, dry hands, or wash your hands immediately afterward if they are not the area being treated.
  • Do not share your tube of gel with other people, to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Keep the tube upright in storage rather than lying flat for long periods.
  • Check the tube’s expiry date printed on the crimped end before each new use.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, nose, and other mucous membranes, and rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not apply to broken, infected, or open wounds. Individuals with a known allergy to aspirin or other salicylates should avoid this product or seek pharmacist advice first. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone on regular oral salicylate or blood-thinning medicine, should check with a doctor or pharmacist before use. Use with caution in children and the elderly.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Speak with a doctor or pharmacist if skin redness, itching, or irritation does not settle after stopping use, or if you notice blistering, a spreading rash, or marked swelling at the application site. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop wheezing, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling after use, as these may be signs of a salicylate or allergic reaction. If the gel is accidentally swallowed or gets into the eyes, rinse with water and seek medical advice or contact the National Poison Centre promptly.
