Overview

SM Fusix 40mg Tablet contains furosemide 40mg, a potent loop diuretic used to treat fluid retention (oedema) caused by heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease, and to help control high blood pressure.

Furosemide works by blocking sodium and chloride reabsorption in a specific part of the kidney called the loop of Henle, which increases the excretion of sodium, chloride, and water into the urine, reducing fluid overload and lowering blood pressure.

How it Works

Furosemide inhibits the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter in the thick ascending loop of Henle in the kidney, preventing the reabsorption of sodium and chloride back into the blood. This causes more sodium, chloride, and water to be excreted in the urine, reducing the volume of fluid in the body and lowering blood pressure.

Directions for Use

Take in the morning, or as directed by your doctor, to avoid needing to urinate frequently during the night. If a second dose is prescribed, take it in the early afternoon. Take with or without food.

Dosage

The dose of furosemide is individualised by your doctor based on the condition being treated and your response, commonly starting at 20mg to 80mg once daily and adjusted as needed. Take exactly as prescribed; do not adjust the dose yourself.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SM Fusix used for?

It is a diuretic used to treat fluid retention (oedema) from heart failure, liver, or kidney disease, and to help control high blood pressure.

How does this medicine work?

It blocks salt reabsorption in the kidney, causing more sodium, chloride, and water to be removed in the urine, reducing fluid overload.

Why should this tablet be taken in the morning?

Taking it in the morning helps avoid needing to urinate frequently during the night, which can disrupt sleep.

What are the common side effects?

Increased urination, dizziness, and low potassium, sodium, or magnesium levels are commonly reported.

Can this medicine be taken with lithium?

Caution is needed – furosemide can reduce the clearance of lithium and increase the risk of lithium toxicity; your doctor may need to monitor lithium levels more closely.

Why do I need regular blood tests while taking this medicine?

Blood tests check your kidney function and electrolyte levels (such as potassium and sodium), which furosemide can affect.

Can this medicine be taken with NSAIDs like ibuprofen?

NSAIDs may reduce the diuretic and blood-pressure-lowering effect of furosemide – check with your doctor before using them together.
