Overview

Epilim 200mg/5ml Syrup contains sodium valproate 200mg/5ml, an anticonvulsant (antiepileptic) medicine also used as a mood stabiliser, formulated as an oral syrup, often used for children or those with difficulty swallowing tablets. It is used to treat various types of epilepsy (seizures) and, in some patients, bipolar disorder.

Sodium valproate is thought to work by increasing levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the brain and by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which together reduce the abnormal, excessive electrical activity in the brain that causes seizures or contributes to mood instability.

How it Works

By increasing GABA activity and blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells, sodium valproate reduces the excessive, uncontrolled electrical signalling in the brain responsible for seizures, and helps stabilise mood in bipolar disorder.

Directions for Use

Measure the dose accurately using the oral syringe or measuring device provided – not a household spoon. Shake well before use if instructed on the label. Can be mixed with a small amount of water or juice if preferred.

Dosage

The dose of Epilim 200mg/5ml Syrup is individualised based on your seizure type, response to treatment, and blood valproate level monitoring. Treatment is usually started at a lower dose and increased gradually by your doctor. Given the careful balance needed between seizure control and the risks of this medicine (including in pregnancy), never start, stop, or adjust your dose without your specialist’s guidance.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Tremors (shaking hands)
  • Hair thinning or loss
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Stomach pain or indigestion

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to sodium valproate or any ingredient in this product
  • Active liver disease or a history of severe hepatic dysfunction
  • Known urea cycle disorders
  • Porphyria
  • Pregnancy, or the possibility of becoming pregnant, without an effective pregnancy prevention programme in place, due to the high risk of serious birth defects and developmental problems (foetal valproate syndrome) – unless no other suitable treatment is available, as assessed by a specialist

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other antiepileptics, such as lamotrigine, phenytoin, or carbamazepine, can have significant level interactions with valproate, requiring dose adjustment and monitoring
  • Carbapenem antibiotics (e.g. meropenem, imipenem) can significantly reduce valproate blood levels, risking breakthrough seizures, and are generally avoided together
  • Aspirin and other highly protein-bound medicines may increase free valproate levels in the blood
  • Alcohol can increase sedation and add to the risk of liver-related side effects, and should be avoided or limited

Quick Tips

  • Never stop or start this medicine, or change your dose, without your specialist’s guidance
  • Attend all scheduled blood tests (liver function, blood counts, and valproate levels) as advised
  • Women and girls of childbearing potential must discuss the pregnancy prevention programme and the risks of valproate in pregnancy with their doctor before, and while, taking this medicine
  • Report unexplained vomiting, severe tiredness, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain to your doctor immediately
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine
  • Carry a valproate alert card or similar documentation if provided by your doctor or pharmacist

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Epilim 200mg/5ml Syrup used for?

Epilim 200mg/5ml Syrup is used to treat various types of epilepsy (seizures) and, in some patients, manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.

Is sodium valproate safe to take during pregnancy?

No. Sodium valproate carries a high risk of serious birth defects and developmental problems in an unborn baby (foetal valproate syndrome) if taken during pregnancy. Women and girls of childbearing potential should be on an effective, specialist-supervised pregnancy prevention programme, and must never stop or start this medicine around pregnancy without urgent specialist guidance, given the need to balance seizure control against these risks.

Why do I need regular blood tests while taking this medicine?

Regular blood tests monitor your liver function, blood counts, and valproate levels, helping your doctor detect rare but serious side effects early and ensure your dose remains appropriate.

Can I stop taking this medicine if my seizures are well-controlled?

No, do not stop without specialist guidance. Stopping suddenly can trigger a return of seizures or a serious withdrawal effect; any change in treatment must be planned and supervised by your specialist.

What early warning signs of liver problems should I watch for?

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice unexplained vomiting, severe lethargy, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, especially within the first six months of starting treatment, as these can be early signs of a serious liver problem.
