Uses of Perindopril

Perindopril is commonly used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure.

How Perindopril Works

Perindopril is an ACE inhibitor that prevents the conversion of angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2 and will cause an increase in plasma renin activity, decreasing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion.

Side Effects of Perindopril

Cholestatic jaundice, Hypotension, Syncope, Palpitations, Tachycardia, Visual disturbances, Tinnitus, Urticaria, Angioedema, Dyspnea, Fulminant hepatic necrosis

Perindopril Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to consume alcohol with Perindopril. Taking Perindopril with alcohol may lower blood pressure and may increase certain side effects of the medication.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Perindopril is unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown evidence of fetotoxicity and it may increase fetal and neonatal morbidity and death. However, there are no controlled data in human pregnancy and this will make it more dangerous to use. Adequate method of contraception should be made when patient is on this medication.

Lactation Limited Data

Perindopril is not recommended to be taken when the mother is still breastfeeding the baby. Although the excretion into human milk is unknown, but it is excreted into animal milk. The effects towards the baby is unknown.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Perindopril may cause side effects such as palpitations, syncope, headache, visual disturbances, dyspnea etc. that is very dangerous to have especially while driving.

Kidney High Risk

Perindopril should be used with a proper prescription by a specialist in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Perindopril may be needed. Please consult your doctor regarding the benefits of using it.

Liver Limited Data

Perindopril may worsen liver disease. It should be used with extreme caution in patients with liver disease and the dose adjustment of Perindopril may be needed. As Perindopril is metabolized in the liver, people with liver failure may have longer time to excrete it from the body and this makes the levels of Perindopril to be higher in the body and causes more side effects.
