Uses of Propranolol

Propranolol is commonly used in the treatment of angina heart-related chest pain, anxiety, arrhythmias, bleeding esophageal varices, heart failure, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, migraine, preventive treatment of migraine, and tremors shaking of hands

How Propranolol Works

Propranolol is a non-selective ß-adrenergic blocker which competitively inhibits ß1 and ß2-receptors, decreasing heart rate, myocardial contractility, blood pressure, and myocardial demand. It produces negative inotropic effect without producing intrinsic sympathomimetic effects.

Side Effects of Propranolol

Transient fatigue, bradycardia, cold extremities, Raynaud's phenomenon; sleep disturbances, nightmares.

Propranolol Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

Alcohol enhances hypotensive effect, and may increase the plasma levels of propranolol.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Propranolol may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Propranolol is shown to be excreted in breast milk. It is not advisable for women to breastfeed while consuming Propranolol because of its potential adverse drug effects on infants.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Propanolol may cause side effects such as dizziness which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

Propranolol should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment of Propranolol may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Use With Care

Propranolol should be used with caution in patients with liver disorder. Dose adjustment of Propranolol may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
