Overview

Nexpro 20mg Tablet contains esomeprazole 20mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and conditions of excess stomach acid production. It is also used together with antibiotics to help eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection.

Esomeprazole works by blocking the proton pumps in the stomach lining that produce acid, which reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and allows the oesophagus or ulcers to heal.

How it Works

Esomeprazole irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach lining, the final step in gastric acid secretion. This significantly reduces both basal and stimulated stomach acid production, allowing irritated or ulcerated tissue to heal.

Directions for Use

Take Nexpro 20mg Tablet at least 1 hour before a meal, usually in the morning, swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water – do not crush or chew it. Continue the full course as prescribed even if your symptoms improve early, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Dosage

The usual dose of Nexpro 20mg Tablet for GERD is 40mg once daily for 4-8 weeks, or 20mg once daily for maintenance therapy, adjusted by your doctor depending on the condition being treated and your response. For H. pylori eradication, it is used together with antibiotics for a shorter, specific course. Always take exactly as prescribed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nexpro 20mg Tablet used for?

Nexpro 20mg Tablet is used to treat acid reflux (GERD), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and excess stomach acid conditions, and is also used with antibiotics to help eradicate H. pylori infection.

When is the best time to take this medicine?

Esomeprazole works best when taken about 1 hour before a meal, usually in the morning, as this allows the medicine to be active when the proton pumps are most stimulated by food.

How long does it take for symptoms to improve?

Many people notice improvement in reflux symptoms within a few days, but it can take up to 4-8 weeks of regular use to fully heal the oesophagus or an ulcer, so complete the full course as prescribed.

Can I take this medicine long-term?

Esomeprazole can be used long-term when prescribed by your doctor, but prolonged use should be periodically reviewed, as it may be associated with reduced absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium over time.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Nexpro 20mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
