Oragel Pain Relief

Oragel Pain Relief is a colourless, menthol-flavoured oral gel intended for direct application inside the mouth, supplied in a small squeeze tube. It is registered and manufactured in Malaysia by Winwa Medical Sdn Bhd, and belongs to the category of topical oral gels combining a salicylate-based agent with an antiseptic compound.

Each application of the gel provides Choline Salicylate 9% w/w and Cetylpyridinium Chloride 0.05% w/w. Choline salicylate is a salicylate-derivative compound, while cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic commonly used in oral care products. Oragel Pain Relief is sold OTC (Over-the-Counter) in Malaysia, meaning it can be purchased at pharmacies and online without needing a doctor’s prescription.

Oragel Pain Relief is sold in small tube pack sizes of 8g and 15g. It should not be confused with similarly-named international oral gel brands that use benzocaine, a different local anaesthetic active ingredient — Oragel Pain Relief, as registered and sold in Malaysia (MAL09082895X), is formulated with the choline salicylate and cetylpyridinium chloride combination described above.

Using a clean fingertip or a cotton bud, apply a small amount of gel directly onto the affected area inside the mouth and gently smear it over the surface. Avoid eating or drinking immediately afterwards where possible, so the gel is not washed away before it has settled onto the area.

Do not exceed the maximum number of applications per day stated on the product packaging. Because Oragel Pain Relief contains a salicylate, avoid using it at the same time as other oral gels, lozenges or products that also contain salicylates or aspirin-related ingredients on the same area, as this can lead to a combined, excessive salicylate exposure. Wash hands before and after application.

Oragel Pain Relief is a topical oral gel and is not swallowed as a measured dose. A small, pea-sized amount is applied directly to the affected area of the mouth using a clean fingertip or cotton bud, up to the maximum number of applications per day stated on the packaging. Do not exceed this labelled maximum within a 24-hour period.

If an application is missed within the intended interval, simply apply the next application as needed rather than doubling up. There is no fixed course length for occasional use, but if there is no improvement after a few days of use, or if the discomfort worsens, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist rather than continuing to self-treat with repeated applications.

Use Oragel Pain Relief before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton. Once opened, use within the timeframe stated on the packaging, and discard the tube if the gel changes in colour, consistency or odour.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the tube cap tightly closed after each use to prevent the gel from drying out or becoming contaminated, and store out of the sight and reach of children.

• Common: Mild, transient stinging, tingling or burning sensation at the application site immediately after use.
• Common: Temporary numbness or an altered sense of taste in the area of application.
• Serious: Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, widespread rash, or difficulty breathing — stop use immediately and seek urgent medical attention.
• Serious: Signs of salicylate sensitivity, such as ringing in the ears or unusual skin reactions with repeated use — discontinue and seek medical advice.

• Known hypersensitivity to salicylates (including choline salicylate or aspirin), cetylpyridinium chloride, or any other ingredient in the gel.
• Products containing salicylates should only be used in young children under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist, given the general caution around salicylate exposure in this age group.
• Individuals with a known bleeding disorder, or those taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines, should seek pharmacist advice before regular use, as salicylates can mildly affect platelet function if a significant amount is absorbed.
• Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or areas of severe ulceration inside the mouth without first checking with a doctor or pharmacist.

• Avoid using together with other oral products, gels or lozenges that also contain salicylates or aspirin-related compounds, as this can lead to additive salicylate exposure.
• Individuals on regular anticoagulant (e.g. warfarin) or antiplatelet (e.g. aspirin, clopidogrel) therapy should seek pharmacist advice before frequent or prolonged use, due to the salicylate content.
• No significant food interactions are known; however, eating or drinking immediately after application may reduce how long the gel remains in contact with the affected area.

• Gently dry the affected area before applying the gel so it adheres better.
• Use a clean fingertip or a fresh cotton bud for each application to maintain hygiene.
• Avoid swallowing excess gel where possible.
• Do not exceed the maximum number of applications per day stated on the packaging.

Precautions: Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a doctor or pharmacist before regular use, given the salicylate content. Use in young children should be supervised by an adult and follow any age guidance stated on the packaging. Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Consult a doctor or pharmacist if discomfort persists beyond 7 days of use, if swelling or pain worsens, if there are signs of infection such as pus or fever, or if any signs of an allergic reaction appear after application.
