Pradaxa 150mg Tablet

Pradaxa 150mg Tablet contains dabigatran etexilate 150mg, a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) that works as a direct thrombin inhibitor. It is used to prevent stroke and systemic embolism in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, and for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The lower strengths, including this 150mg dose, are typically reserved for specific dosing scenarios such as reduced kidney function, advanced age, or use alongside certain interacting medicines, as decided by your doctor.

Dabigatran etexilate is a prodrug that is converted in the body to active dabigatran, which directly and reversibly binds to and inhibits thrombin – the enzyme responsible for converting fibrinogen into fibrin, the final step in blood clot formation. By blocking both free and clot-bound thrombin, dabigatran reduces the blood’s ability to form harmful clots without requiring routine coagulation monitoring in most patients.

Once absorbed, dabigatran etexilate is converted to its active form, which binds directly to the active site of thrombin, blocking it from converting fibrinogen to fibrin. This directly interrupts the final common pathway of the blood clotting cascade, reducing the risk of harmful clot formation in the heart, veins, or lungs.

Swallow Pradaxa 150mg Tablet capsules whole with a full glass of water; do not open, break, or chew the capsule, as this significantly increases the rate of absorption and the risk of bleeding. Take the capsule at consistent times each day, with or without food, and try not to miss a dose, since its anticoagulant effect wears off relatively quickly if a dose is delayed.

The dose of Pradaxa 150mg Tablet is individualised by your doctor based on your indication, kidney function, age, and bleeding risk – standard dosing for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation is typically 150mg twice daily, with reduced doses of 110mg or 75mg twice daily used for patients with reduced kidney function, those aged 80 and above, or those taking certain interacting medicines. Always take the exact dose and strength prescribed and do not change it without consulting your doctor.

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

• Known hypersensitivity to dabigatran etexilate or any ingredient in this product
• Active, clinically significant bleeding
• Severe kidney impairment
• A lesion or condition considered a significant risk factor for major bleeding (e.g. active or recent gastrointestinal ulceration)
• Mechanical prosthetic heart valve (dabigatran is not recommended in this setting)

• Other anticoagulants, antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), and NSAIDs increase the risk of bleeding when combined
• Strong P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, dronedarone) can increase dabigatran blood levels and bleeding risk
• P-glycoprotein inducers (e.g. rifampicin, St John’s Wort) can reduce dabigatran’s effectiveness, increasing clot risk
• Verapamil and amiodarone may increase dabigatran levels – inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking

• Never crush, chew, or open the capsule before swallowing
• Never stop this medicine on your own, even briefly, without your doctor’s advice, as this can raise your risk of stroke or clot
• Tell every doctor, dentist, or pharmacist that you are taking this medicine before any procedure or new prescription
• Report unusual bleeding, bruising, or blood in your urine or stool to your doctor promptly
• Carry a note or alert card stating you are on an anticoagulant, in case of emergency
