Lecithin is a naturally occurring chemical found in your body's tissues. It's composed up of fatty acids and has numerous commercial and medical applications.
Lecithin is an emulsifier, which means it holds fats and oils in suspension and prevents them from combining with other substances.
Sunflower seeds, eggs, and soybeans are the most common sources of lecithin supplements. By far the most frequent substance used to make lecithin supplements is soy. Animal fats, fish, and grains have also been employed in the past.
While soybean lecithin is often sold in granulated capsule form, sunflower lecithin is available in both liquid and powder forms. Sunflower lecithin isn't as widespread as soy lecithin, but some individuals would prefer it, particularly if they're trying to avoid GMOs in their diet.
Supplements containing lecithin can be used to manage excessive cholesterol, support breastfeeding, and improve liver function, among other things.
