Overview

Akurit 4 Tablet is a prescription-only medicine (POM) presented as a tablet, with Ethambutol hydrochloride, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide and Rifampicin as its active ingredient content.

This page is limited to product, safety and handling information, in line with Malaysian rules on prescription medicine information for the public. Your prescriber or pharmacist is the right source for anything beyond that, together with the leaflet inside the pack.

Through DoctorOnCall, this product is supplied after an online consultation with a licensed doctor and a valid prescription, and it is checked by a registered pharmacist before dispensing. Take it exactly as prescribed, and speak to your doctor before stopping, changing the dose, or starting any other medicine alongside it.

Directions for Use

Take Akurit 4 Tablet once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, exactly as directed by your TB treatment team. Never stop, skip doses, or reduce the dose on your own, as incomplete treatment can lead to drug-resistant tuberculosis, which is much harder to treat.

Dosage

The dose of Akurit 4 Tablet is calculated by your TB specialist based on your body weight, according to national TB treatment guidelines, and must be taken exactly as prescribed for the full intensive phase of treatment, usually under directly observed therapy.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Blurred vision or changes in color vision
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Skin rash or itching

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to ethambutol, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, rifampicin, or other rifamycins
  • Severe active liver disease
  • Acute gout (pyrazinamide can raise uric acid levels)
  • Pre-existing optic neuritis or inability to reliably report visual changes (relevant to the ethambutol component)

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Rifampicin strongly induces liver enzymes, significantly reducing the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, warfarin, and many other medicines – alternative contraception and dose adjustments of other drugs are often needed
  • Alcohol increases the risk of liver toxicity and should be avoided during treatment
  • Antacids can reduce absorption of the isoniazid component if taken at the same time
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you are taking, as rifampicin has extensive drug interactions

Quick Tips

  • Never stop this medicine early or skip doses, even if you feel better, as incomplete treatment risks drug-resistant TB
  • Expect your urine, tears, and sweat to turn orange-red – this is a harmless, expected effect of rifampicin
  • Attend all scheduled liver function blood tests and eye examinations throughout treatment
  • Report any vision changes, persistent nausea, or yellowing of the skin/eyes to your TB specialist immediately

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Ethambutol hydrochloride
  • Isoniazid
  • Pyrazinamide
