Overview

Alu-Tab 600mg Tablet is a single-ingredient antacid tablet, with each film-coated tablet containing Aluminium Hydroxide 600mg as its only active ingredient. It belongs to the aluminium-containing antacid class of products (ATC class A02AB01) and does not include magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, or any other active ingredient alongside the aluminium hydroxide. This makes it a simpler, single-salt alternative to combination antacid products such as Alucid Tablet or Alucid Suspension, which pair aluminium hydroxide with other active ingredients.

Alu-Tab 600mg Tablet is classified as an Over-the-Counter (OTC) product and can be bought at pharmacies in Malaysia without a prescription. It has also historically been listed on general sale registers in the wider region, reflecting its long-standing status as a straightforward, Over-the-Counter antacid. It is typically supplied as film-coated tablets in packs of 100 tablets.

What distinguishes Alu-Tab 600mg Tablet from combination antacids is its single-ingredient formulation — some customers specifically prefer a product containing aluminium hydroxide alone, for example to avoid the laxative effect of magnesium hydroxide, or because a doctor or pharmacist has recommended a single-salt antacid for their situation. As with any aluminium-only antacid, its constipating tendency should be kept in mind, particularly with regular or prolonged use.

Directions for Use

Swallow 1 to 2 tablets with a glass of water, taken after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. The tablet may also be chewed before swallowing if preferred, but should not be crushed in advance and stored, as this may affect its stability. If symptoms persist after a dose, wait at least one hour before taking a repeat dose unless otherwise directed by a pharmacist.

Dosage

The usual adult and adolescent (12 years and above) dose is 1 to 2 tablets, taken after meals and at bedtime, up to a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours unless otherwise directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Do not use continuously for more than 2 weeks without medical advice. If a dose is missed, take the next dose when needed rather than doubling up. This product is not intended for children under 12 years old unless specifically directed by a doctor, and elderly patients or those with kidney impairment should follow a doctor’s or pharmacist’s dosing guidance rather than the standard adult dose, since aluminium salts rely on the kidneys for clearance. Because this product contains aluminium hydroxide alone with no magnesium component to offset its constipating effect, people prone to constipation should use it with particular care and under pharmacist guidance. Seek medical advice if symptoms do not improve after a few days of regular use.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original strip packaging until ready to take, and keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach cramps
  • Changes in taste
  • Long-term use may lead to low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to aluminium hydroxide or any other ingredient in this tablet.
  • Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure, where aluminium can accumulate to harmful levels.
  • Severe, undiagnosed abdominal pain, as antacids may mask symptoms of a serious underlying condition such as appendicitis.
  • Intestinal obstruction or significantly reduced bowel motility, as the constipating effect of aluminium hydroxide may worsen these conditions.
  • Low blood phosphate levels, as aluminium hydroxide can bind dietary phosphate and lower levels further.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Aluminium hydroxide can reduce the absorption of many other oral medicines, including certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones), iron supplements, and some heart and thyroid medicines — separate the timing of Alu-Tab 600mg Tablet from other oral medicines by at least 1-2 hours.
  • Do not take together with other aluminium-containing antacid products at the same time, to avoid duplicating the same active ingredient and increasing the risk of side effects such as constipation.
  • Taking this tablet with meals, as recommended, does not reduce its effect; no other significant food-avoidance is required.
  • People taking regular prescription medicines for chronic conditions should check with a pharmacist about timing this tablet around their other medicines.

Quick Tips

  • Take with a full glass of water, after meals and at bedtime, for best effect.
  • Take other oral medicines at least 1-2 hours apart from this tablet to avoid reduced absorption.
  • Because this is a single-ingredient aluminium product, be mindful of constipation with regular use and ensure adequate fluid and fibre intake.
  • Avoid using continuously for more than 2 weeks without checking with a doctor or pharmacist.
  • Store the strips in a cool, dry place and keep them out of reach of children.
  • If you have kidney problems, check with a pharmacist before using this product regularly.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient (per tablet): Aluminium Hydroxide 600mg.
  • Formulated as a film-coated tablet, with no magnesium hydroxide or simethicone included.
  • Commonly supplied in packs of 100 tablets.
  • Full inactive ingredient (excipient) listing is not publicly disclosed by the manufacturer; customers with known excipient sensitivities should check the printed package insert or ask a pharmacist.
