Overview

Amxol 30mg Tablet is an OTC (Over-the-Counter) oral tablet manufactured by Biolab, with each tablet containing Ambroxol Hydrochloride 30mg as its active ingredient. Ambroxol HCl belongs to the mucolytic/expectorant class of medicines and is one of the most widely available cough-and-cold preparations sold in pharmacies across Malaysia. The tablet is round, flat, and white in appearance, bisected on one face for ease of splitting, and bears the manufacturer’s logo.

As an OTC product, Amxol 30mg Tablet can be purchased at community pharmacies and online pharmacies in Malaysia without a doctor’s prescription, though a pharmacist’s advice is recommended for first-time use or if symptoms persist. The tablet form is commonly chosen by adults and older children who are able to swallow tablets, as an alternative to the syrup formulation of the same active ingredient (Amxol 30mg/5ml Syrup), which is typically used for younger children or patients who prefer a liquid dosage form.

Amxol 30mg Tablet is sold in Malaysia in blister-packed strips, commonly in packs of 10 tablets. Customers should verify the batch number and expiry date printed on the blister strip and outer carton before use, and should not use the product beyond its stated expiry date.

Directions for Use

Swallow Amxol 30mg Tablet whole with a full glass of water; the tablet may be taken with or without food. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless advised by a pharmacist. Check the ingredients of any other cough, cold, or flu products you are taking at the same time to avoid unintentionally duplicating ambroxol or other active ingredients.

Dosage

The typical adult dose of Amxol 30mg Tablet is one tablet (30mg) taken two to three times a day. Amxol 30mg Tablet is generally intended for adults and children old enough to swallow tablets safely; younger children are usually given the Amxol 30mg/5ml Syrup formulation instead, dosed according to age and body weight as printed on the package insert. Do not exceed the maximum daily dose stated on the product label. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but skip it if it is almost time for the next dose — do not double up. If symptoms do not improve within 5 to 7 days, or if they worsen, stop self-treating and see a doctor or pharmacist.

Storage Instructions

Store Amxol 30mg Tablet at room temperature, below 30°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the blister strip in its original carton until ready for use, and keep the product out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: mild nausea or stomach discomfort.
  • Common: dry mouth or throat.
  • Common: mild diarrhoea or upset stomach.
  • Serious: signs of an allergic reaction, such as skin rash, hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing, which require immediate medical attention.
  • Serious: severe skin reactions (very rare), such as widespread blistering or peeling of the skin, which require stopping the medicine and seeking urgent medical care.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Ambroxol, bromhexine (a related compound), or any other ingredient in the tablet.
  • Use together with centrally-acting cough suppressants (antitussives) that inhibit the cough reflex, as this combination can cause harmful accumulation of mucus in the airways.
  • Caution in patients with a history of stomach ulcers, as mucolytic agents may, in rare cases, affect the stomach lining.
  • Not recommended for infants or very young children without medical advice — the syrup formulation at an appropriate dose is generally preferred for this age group.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Do not take Amxol 30mg Tablet together with cough suppressants (antitussives) such as dextromethorphan or codeine-based products, as suppressing the cough reflex while a mucolytic increases mucus volume can lead to dangerous mucus retention in the airways.
  • Ambroxol has been reported to increase the concentration of certain antibiotics (such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, and doxycycline) in bronchial secretions when taken together; inform your doctor or pharmacist of all antibiotics you are taking.
  • No clinically significant food interactions have been identified; the tablet may be taken with or without food.

Quick Tips

  • Take the tablet with a full glass of water to help it move smoothly down the throat.
  • Keep track of how many days you have taken the product, and seek medical advice if symptoms last beyond a week.
  • Check the active ingredients of any other cough or cold medicine before combining it with Amxol 30mg Tablet.
  • Keep the blister strip in its original packaging until just before use, to protect the tablets from moisture.
  • Drink plenty of plain water throughout the day, as adequate hydration supports the normal consistency of airway secretions.
  • Store the tablets away from children and pets at all times.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Ambroxol Hydrochloride (HCl) 30 mg per tablet.
  • Ambroxol HCl belongs to the mucolytic/expectorant class of medicines, used in bronchopulmonary conditions associated with abnormal mucus secretion.
  • Manufactured by Biolab and distributed by Biopharm.
  • Each tablet is a round, flat, white, bisected tablet supplied in blister packs.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use Amxol 30mg Tablet with caution in patients with chronic liver or kidney disease, a history of stomach ulcers, or known sensitivity to ambroxol or bromhexine. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. Avoid combining it with other mucus-affecting or cough-suppressant medicines without professional advice.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical attention if your cough persists for more than 7 days, if you develop a fever, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, if your phlegm becomes blood-tinged or changes colour significantly, or if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction after taking this product.
