Overview

Angeliq Tablet is a combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) tablet containing drospirenone and estradiol, used to relieve moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, and to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women for whom other treatments are not suitable.

Estradiol replaces the oestrogen that declines after menopause, relieving symptoms caused by this hormonal drop, while drospirenone, a progestogen, is included to protect the lining of the womb (endometrium) from the effects of unopposed oestrogen in women who still have a uterus.

How it Works

Estradiol binds to oestrogen receptors throughout the body, restoring hormone levels that fall after menopause and relieving vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats) and supporting bone density. Drospirenone acts on the endometrium to prevent the excessive lining growth that oestrogen alone can cause, reducing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer.

Directions for Use

Take Angeliq Tablet at about the same time every day, with or without food, to help maintain steady hormone levels. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If you are switching from another HRT product, follow your doctor’s specific instructions on when to start this medicine.

Dosage

The usual dose of Angeliq Tablet is one tablet once daily, taken continuously without a break between packs. Your doctor will determine whether this is the right HRT formulation and dose for you, and will periodically review the need to continue treatment.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache or migraine
  • Changes in menstrual bleeding
  • Weight changes
  • Mood swings
  • Bloating or fluid retention

Contraindications

  • Known or suspected breast cancer, or a personal history of breast cancer
  • Known or suspected oestrogen-dependent cancer
  • Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Current or past venous thromboembolism (blood clot in a vein), or a known clotting disorder
  • Severe liver disease or significantly impaired kidney function (relevant to the drospirenone component)
  • Pregnancy

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Medicines that induce liver enzymes (e.g. certain anticonvulsants, rifampicin, St John’s Wort) can reduce the effectiveness of the hormones
  • ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and potassium-sparing diuretics may increase blood potassium when combined with the drospirenone component
  • NSAIDs may also increase the risk of raised potassium when combined with drospirenone
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines you take, as several can affect hormone levels or interact with drospirenone’s mild diuretic effect

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time each day without a break between packs
  • Report any leg swelling, pain, sudden breathlessness, or chest pain to your doctor immediately
  • Attend regular breast checks and follow your doctor’s recommended screening schedule while on HRT
  • Discuss the duration of treatment with your doctor periodically, as HRT is generally used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary time

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Angeliq Tablet used for?

Angeliq Tablet is a combined HRT used to relieve moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, and to help prevent osteoporosis in certain postmenopausal women.

Why does this HRT contain two hormones instead of one?

Estradiol relieves menopausal symptoms, but using oestrogen alone in a woman who still has a uterus can overstimulate the womb lining. Drospirenone, a progestogen, is included to protect the endometrium from this effect.

Is it normal to have irregular bleeding when starting this medicine?

Some irregular spotting or bleeding is common in the first few months of continuous combined HRT as your body adjusts. If bleeding is heavy, persistent, or starts after it had settled, tell your doctor.

What increases my risk of blood clots while on HRT?

Risk factors include smoking, obesity, immobility (e.g. long-haul flights, surgery), and a personal or family history of blood clots. Discuss your individual risk factors with your doctor before and during treatment.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Angeliq Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
