Overview

Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet contains atorvastatin 20mg, a statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in people with or at risk of heart disease.

Atorvastatin works by blocking the liver enzyme responsible for producing cholesterol, which lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides while modestly raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol.

How it Works

Atorvastatin competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the liver’s cholesterol synthesis pathway. This reduces cholesterol production and increases the number of LDL receptors on liver cells, which pulls more LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream.

Directions for Use

Take Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet once daily, at any time of day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Try to take it at the same time each day and continue taking it even if you feel well, since high cholesterol usually has no symptoms and control is long-term.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet is 10-20mg once daily, which your doctor may adjust up to a maximum of 80mg daily depending on your cholesterol response and cardiovascular risk. Your doctor will determine the right dose and monitoring schedule, including periodic cholesterol and liver function tests, for your condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet used for?

Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet is used to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with or at risk of cardiovascular disease.

How long does it take for atorvastatin to lower cholesterol?

Cholesterol levels typically start improving within 1-2 weeks, with the full effect usually seen after about 4 weeks of regular use.

Can I drink alcohol while taking this medicine?

It is best to limit alcohol intake, as both alcohol and atorvastatin are processed by the liver, and combining them may increase the risk of liver-related side effects.

Why should I avoid grapefruit juice with this medicine?

Grapefruit juice contains compounds that interfere with the enzyme that breaks down atorvastatin, which can raise its blood levels and increase the risk of muscle-related side effects.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Apo-Atorvastatin 20mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not double the dose.
