Overview

Apo-Trihex 2mg Tablet contains trihexyphenidyl 2mg, an anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) medicine used to relieve the tremor, muscle stiffness (rigidity), and slowness of movement seen in Parkinson’s disease, and to control drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) caused by certain antipsychotic medicines.

In Parkinson’s disease and drug-induced EPS, there is a relative excess of the chemical messenger acetylcholine compared to dopamine in the parts of the brain that control movement. Trihexyphenidyl works by blocking acetylcholine’s action, helping to restore the balance between these two chemical messengers and reducing tremor and stiffness.

How it Works

Trihexyphenidyl blocks central muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the basal ganglia, the brain region that coordinates movement. By reducing excessive cholinergic activity relative to dopamine, it helps to lessen tremor, rigidity, and abnormal movements.

Directions for Use

Take Apo-Trihex 2mg Tablet exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. If you are taking it several times a day, try to space the doses evenly and take them at the same times each day to keep symptom control consistent.

Dosage

Treatment with Apo-Trihex 2mg Tablet usually starts at a low dose, such as 1mg daily, which your doctor will gradually increase over several days to a total daily dose (commonly divided into 3-4 doses) that controls your symptoms with the fewest side effects. The exact dose is individualised based on your response and tolerance, so always follow your doctor’s instructions rather than adjusting the dose yourself.
