Overview

Avazet 10/20mg Tablet is a prescription-only fixed-dose combination medicine. Each tablet contains ezetimibe 10mg and atorvastatin 20mg (as atorvastatin calcium). It is supplied as an oral tablet for once-daily administration as directed by your doctor.

Avazet is prescribed only after an assessment by a doctor, who will decide whether it is suitable for you and which strength you should take. Take it exactly as directed and attend the follow-up visits and blood tests, including liver function tests, that your doctor arranges. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before stopping this medicine or taking it together with other medicines or supplements.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day, at about the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food, in the morning or the evening. If you also take a bile acid sequestrant such as colestyramine, take Avazet at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after it. Follow any diet and lifestyle advice given by your doctor while taking this medicine.

Dosage

The usual adult dose is one tablet (ezetimibe 10mg/atorvastatin 20mg) taken once daily. Your doctor chooses the strength based on your individual assessment, your response to previous treatment and any other medicines you take, and may adjust the dose after follow-up and blood tests. Do not change the dose or stop the medicine without speaking to your doctor.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: headache, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, wind (flatulence) and tiredness
  • Common: muscle aches or joint pain (myalgia), nasopharyngitis (cold-like symptoms) and sleep disturbance
  • Uncommon: raised liver enzymes (ALT/AST) or creatine kinase on blood tests, constipation, dizziness, rash and indigestion
  • Rare: raised blood sugar, memory problems or confusion reported with statins
  • Serious – seek medical help immediately: unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness (especially with fever or dark urine), yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or swelling of the face, lips or throat

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to ezetimibe, atorvastatin or any other ingredient of the tablet
  • Active liver disease, or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes (transaminases)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, and women of childbearing potential who are not using reliable contraception
  • Not suitable for children unless specifically prescribed by a specialist, as safety and efficacy have not been established in most paediatric patients

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Ciclosporin (immunosuppressant), certain HIV protease inhibitors and hepatitis C antivirals can raise atorvastatin levels and the risk of muscle damage – your doctor will advise if the combination is appropriate
  • Macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin, erythromycin), azole antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole) and fusidic acid may increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis – inform your doctor before using these medicines
  • Fibrates (gemfibrozil, fenofibrate) and niacin at high doses may increase the risk of muscle problems and gallstones; colestyramine reduces absorption if taken too close together; warfarin may need closer INR monitoring
  • Grapefruit juice in large amounts (more than about 1.2 litres a day) can raise atorvastatin levels; heavy alcohol intake may increase the risk of liver problems
  • Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription, over-the-counter and herbal medicines you are taking

Quick Tips

  • Take it at the same time every day, exactly as prescribed, and do not stop unless your doctor tells you to
  • Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness to your doctor promptly, especially if you also feel unwell or have a fever
  • Expect periodic blood tests, including liver function tests, as advised by your doctor to check that the medicine is well tolerated
  • Keep a list of all your medicines and supplements and show it to every doctor or pharmacist you see

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Avazet 10/20mg Tablet contain?

Each Avazet 10/20mg tablet contains ezetimibe 10mg and atorvastatin 20mg (as atorvastatin calcium). It is a prescription-only medicine, so a doctor must assess you and issue a prescription before it can be supplied.

Can I take Avazet at any time of day, with or without food?

Yes. One tablet is taken once daily at any time of day, with or without food. Choose a time you can stick to every day. If you take colestyramine, space the doses as your doctor or pharmacist advises.

Can I drink grapefruit juice or alcohol while taking Avazet?

Small amounts of grapefruit juice are generally unlikely to cause problems, but large daily amounts can increase atorvastatin levels and are best avoided. Alcohol should be kept to a minimum because atorvastatin is processed by the liver; ask your doctor what is safe for you.

Is it safe to take Avazet together with other medicines?

Some medicines can interact with the atorvastatin in Avazet, including certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, fibrates and ciclosporin. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about every prescription, over-the-counter and herbal medicine you take so they can check for interactions.

What should I do if I get muscle pain while taking this medicine?

Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, particularly if you also have a fever, feel generally unwell or notice dark urine. These can be signs of a rare but serious muscle problem (rhabdomyolysis), and your doctor may check your blood and adjust or stop the medicine.

Will I need blood tests while taking Avazet?

Yes. Your doctor will usually check your liver function and other blood tests before you start and at regular intervals, as well as if symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes or severe tiredness appear. Do not skip these follow-up tests.

Can Avazet be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. Avazet should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and women who could become pregnant should use reliable contraception while taking it. Tell your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and carry on as usual. Never take two tablets together to make up for a missed dose.
