Overview

Axcel Papain 10000u Tablet is an oral tablet containing papain, a protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzyme obtained from the latex of the papaya plant, Carica papaya. Each tablet provides papain equivalent to 10,000 USP units, and it is a light blue, round, biconvex tablet with a score line on one side. It is manufactured in Melaka, Malaysia by Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn Bhd under the Axcel brand.

Papain belongs to the group of plant-derived protease enzymes, which are proteins that break down other proteins into smaller peptides. On the leaflet, the tablet is taken by mouth together with other measures directed by a doctor, rather than as a stand-alone product. As an enzyme preparation, its ingredient profile is different from paracetamol, ibuprofen, or steroid tablets, and it contains none of these.

It is an over-the-counter product, so it can be purchased from pharmacies without a prescription, and DoctorOnCall lists it in a 10-tablet strip pack. As with all oral medicines, please read the leaflet, follow the directions on the label, and speak to our pharmacist team before ordering if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking blood-thinning medicines, have a bleeding disorder, or have a known allergy to papaya or latex. Our pharmacist team can also confirm the pack size and expiry details before your order is dispatched.

Directions for Use

For oral administration only. Swallow the tablets with a glass of water, preferably with or after food, and follow the schedule given on the packaging leaflet or by your doctor. The leaflet for adults describes taking 2 tablets 4 times daily, starting one day before surgery where a doctor has advised this, and then continuing 4 times daily for about 5 days.

Swallow the tablets whole, and do not take more than the amount stated in the leaflet. For children, the dose must be decided by a doctor. If you have been told to take this product around a surgery date, follow your surgeon’s or anaesthetist’s instructions on when to start and when to stop.

Dosage

Adults: 2 tablets 4 times daily, beginning one day before surgery where advised, followed by 4 times daily for about 5 days, as stated in the Consumer Medication Information Leaflet. Children: as directed by a doctor. Some retail listings show a lower schedule of 1 to 2 tablets 2 to 3 times daily, so always follow the leaflet in your pack or your healthcare professional’s instruction.

If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose; do not take a double dose. Stop and see a doctor if you develop a rash, unusual bruising or bleeding, or breathing difficulty, or if the swelling or inflammation worsens or does not settle.

Storage Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place at the temperature stated on the packaging (usually below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture, keeping the tablets in their original strip until use. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Skin irritation (when used topically)
  • Allergic reactions such as rash or itching
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (e.g., nausea, diarrhea)
  • Sore throat (with prolonged use)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to papain, papaya, papaya latex, or any other ingredient in the tablet.
  • Known bleeding disorders or active bleeding, unless a doctor has specifically advised the use of this product.
  • Use in children unless a doctor has decided the dose, as the leaflet states that children’s dosing is to be decided by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, and other anticoagulants or antiplatelets may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding when combined with proteolytic enzymes, so check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines and supplements you take, especially other enzyme products, herbal supplements that affect clotting, and medicines you are taking around surgery.
  • No specific food interactions are known, but taking the tablets with or after food may reduce stomach upset.

Quick Tips

  • Swallow the tablets with water and take them with or after food to keep stomach upset to a minimum.
  • Follow the exact schedule in the leaflet and never stretch the course beyond what your doctor has advised.
  • Tell your surgeon, dentist, or anaesthetist that you are taking this product before any procedure.
  • Keep the tablets in the original strip until you are ready to take them, as they are sensitive to moisture.
  • Tell your pharmacist about a papaya, latex, or kiwi allergy before you start.
  • Check for lactose in the ingredient list if you are lactose intolerant, because the tablet contains lactose.

  • Active ingredient: Papain (pure), equivalent to proteolytic enzymes from Carica papaya 10,000 USP units per tablet.
  • Ingredient class: Plant-derived proteolytic enzyme (protease).
  • Inactive ingredients: Magnesium stearate, lactose, sodium starch glycollate, PVP K90, brilliant blue dye, talcum powder, microcrystalline cellulose, and purified water, as listed on the product leaflet.
