Overview

Bayer Bepanthen Ointment is a soft, white to pale yellow, greasy ointment for topical use on the skin. Its active ingredient is dexpanthenol 5% w/w, which is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid (provitamin B5). The ointment base is made up of lanolin (wool alcohols), white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin, almond oil and purified water.

Dexpanthenol is converted to pantothenic acid in the skin, and pantothenic acid is a component of coenzyme A, which takes part in many metabolic processes in skin cells. The ointment base forms an occlusive layer on the skin that slows water loss, and the formulation is free from preservatives and artificial fragrances according to the manufacturer. The ointment is dense and spreads in a thin layer, so a little goes a long way.

Bayer Bepanthen Ointment is an over-the-counter product sold through DoctorOnCall as an online pharmacy serving customers in Malaysia and Singapore. Pack sizes follow the variation options shown on this page. Our pharmacist team can answer questions about application, safety and suitability for your family before you place an order.

Directions for Use

Wash and dry your hands and clean the skin area gently, then pat it dry before application. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the intended area of skin and spread it lightly; do not rub in hard, as the ointment is meant to stay on the surface of the skin.

The ointment can be applied as often as needed, usually once to several times daily, or as directed on the pack leaflet. When used on a baby’s nappy area, apply a thin layer at each nappy change after cleaning and drying the skin. When used on other areas, reapply after washing the area.

For external use only. Do not apply inside the eyes, nose or mouth, and wash your hands after use. Close the cap or tube tightly after use and keep out of the reach of children.

Dosage

For adults, children and babies, apply a thin layer to the intended area of skin as needed, up to several times daily, or as directed on the pack leaflet. There is no fixed maximum, but use only as much ointment as is needed to cover the area with a thin layer.

If a dose is missed, simply apply at the next opportunity. Do not apply thick layers or use under tightly occluding dressings unless advised by a healthcare professional. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist if the skin condition worsens, spreads or does not improve after several days of regular use.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton. Do not use after the expiry date, and note the date the tube was first opened if you wish to track how long it has been in use.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap tightly closed after each use and keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not freeze.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, temporary redness or warmth at the application site in some people with very sensitive skin.
  • Common: A greasy or sticky feeling on the skin after application, which is related to the ointment base.
  • Serious: Allergic contact dermatitis presenting as itching, redness, rash, hives or swelling at the application site, which is rare and can be caused by lanolin or other ingredients; stop use and seek medical advice.
  • Serious: Signs of infection at the site of application, such as spreading redness, warmth, increasing pain, pus or fever; seek medical attention.
  • Serious: Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, which would indicate a severe allergic reaction; seek urgent medical care.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to dexpanthenol, pantothenic acid, lanolin (wool alcohols) or any other ingredient in the ointment.
  • Application to deep wounds, heavily infected or weeping areas, or burns, unless advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Application inside the eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Use under tightly occluding dressings or bandages unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant interactions with other medicines are known when applied to the skin.
  • Other topical products applied to the same area: apply them at separate times and avoid layering many products on the same skin site, as the greasy base may affect absorption of other topical medicines.
  • The paraffin base can weaken latex products such as condoms and diaphragms; avoid contact if you rely on them.
  • Paraffin-based ointments can make clothing and dressings burn more easily if they are exposed to fire; keep away from naked flames and cigarettes.
  • No known interactions with food or drink.

Quick Tips

  • Clean and dry the skin before each application so the ointment sits on a clean surface.
  • Apply a thin layer only; thick layers can feel greasy and make clothing and bedding stick to the skin.
  • Wash clothes, towels and bedding that come into contact with the ointment at a high temperature, as paraffin residue builds up in fabric.
  • Keep the tube or pot away from naked flames and do not smoke while applying the product or while clothing or dressings are soaked with ointment.
  • Wash your hands before and after application, particularly when applying to babies.
  • Store the tube tightly closed to keep the ointment clean and prevent it from drying out.
