Overview

Betac 20mg Tablet contains betaxolol 20mg, a cardioselective (beta-1-selective) beta-blocker taken by mouth to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This oral tablet form works throughout the body to lower blood pressure, and is distinct from the eye-drop form of betaxolol used for glaucoma.

Betaxolol works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, mainly found in the heart, which reduces heart rate and the force of each heartbeat. This lowers the heart’s oxygen demand and reduces blood pressure over time.

How it Works

Betaxolol selectively blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing the effect of adrenaline-like hormones that would otherwise speed up the heart rate and increase the force of contraction. It also reduces renin release from the kidneys, which further contributes to lowering blood pressure.

Directions for Use

Take Betac 20mg Tablet once daily, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without your doctor’s advice, as abruptly stopping a beta-blocker can cause a rebound rise in blood pressure or worsen heart-related symptoms.

Dosage

The usual starting dose of Betac 20mg Tablet is 10-20mg once daily, which your doctor may increase depending on your blood pressure response, generally up to a maximum of 40mg daily. Your doctor will determine the right dose for you, and dose adjustment may be needed if you have kidney impairment.

Shelf Life

Use this product before the expiry date stated on the packaging. Do not use the medicine if the expiry date has passed.

  • Other blood pressure medicines may increase the risk of low blood pressure
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medicines – betaxolol can mask the warning signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat
  • Clonidine – stopping clonidine while taking a beta-blocker can cause a dangerous rebound rise in blood pressure

Quick Tips

  • Take at the same time each day to build a consistent routine
  • Do not stop this medicine abruptly – your doctor will taper the dose if it needs to be stopped
  • Check your pulse periodically if advised by your doctor, and report a very slow or irregular heartbeat
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, as this medicine can mask signs of low blood sugar

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Betac 20mg Tablet used for?

Betac 20mg Tablet is an oral tablet used to treat high blood pressure. It is not the same product as betaxolol eye drops, which are used for a different condition (raised eye pressure/glaucoma).

Why can’t I stop taking this medicine suddenly?

Stopping a beta-blocker abruptly can cause a rebound increase in heart rate and blood pressure, and in people with heart disease it can trigger chest pain or other cardiac symptoms – your doctor will reduce the dose gradually if it needs to be stopped.

Will this medicine slow down my heart rate?

Yes, a slower heart rate is an expected effect of betaxolol. Tell your doctor if your pulse feels unusually slow, irregular, or if you feel faint.

Can I take this medicine if I have asthma?

Beta-blockers, including betaxolol, are generally avoided in people with severe asthma or COPD, as they can worsen breathing difficulty – discuss your respiratory history with your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Betac 20mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
