Overview

Casodex 50mg Tablet contains bicalutamide 50mg, a non-steroidal anti-androgen used in the management of advanced prostate cancer, usually together with a luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogue as directed by a specialist. This medicine must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor experienced in cancer care.

Bicalutamide works by blocking androgen receptors in prostate tissue, preventing testosterone and other androgens from binding and driving the growth of prostate cancer cells. When started together with an LHRH analogue, it also helps block the temporary testosterone surge (“tumour flare”) that can occur in the first weeks of LHRH analogue therapy.

How it Works

Bicalutamide competitively binds to androgen receptors in prostate tumour cells, blocking the action of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone without itself activating the receptor. This deprives androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cells of the hormonal signal they need to grow, slowing disease progression when used as part of a specialist-directed treatment plan.

Directions for Use

Take Casodex 50mg Tablet once daily at about the same time each day, with or without food, swallowing the tablet whole with water. Continue taking it exactly as prescribed by your specialist, and do not stop treatment abruptly even if you feel well, unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

Dosage

The dose and duration of Casodex 50mg Tablet will be individualised and closely monitored by your treating doctor as part of your overall prostate cancer treatment plan, commonly one tablet once daily alongside an LHRH analogue. Never change your dose or stop this medicine without first discussing it with your specialist, and attend all scheduled monitoring appointments and blood tests.
