Overview

Cavsamir 800mg Tablet contains sevelamer carbonate, a non-calcium, non-absorbed phosphate binder used to control high blood phosphate levels (hyperphosphataemia) in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis.

Sevelamer carbonate works within the gut itself: it binds to dietary phosphate in the stomach and intestine, forming a complex that is passed out in the stool instead of being absorbed into the bloodstream. Because it works locally in the gut, it does not add extra calcium to the body, unlike some older phosphate binders.

How it Works

Cavsamir contains polymer molecules with multiple binding sites that attract and trap phosphate from food while it is still in the digestive tract. Once bound, the phosphate-sevelamer complex cannot be absorbed and is eliminated in the faeces, which lowers the amount of phosphate that reaches the bloodstream.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with food; do not crush, chew, or break it. Take it at the start of or during a meal, since it only works on the phosphate present in food eaten around the same time.

Dosage

The usual starting dose is one to two tablets taken three times daily with meals, but the exact dose is individualised by the treating doctor based on blood phosphate levels, which are monitored regularly and used to adjust the dose upward or downward over time.

Shelf Life

Refer to the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Side Effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence (gas)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to sevelamer carbonate or any ingredient in the tablet
  • Hypophosphataemia (abnormally low blood phosphate)
  • Bowel obstruction

Drug / Food Interactions

  • May reduce the absorption of ciprofloxacin if taken at the same time – separate dosing as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • May affect absorption of some other oral medicines because it binds substances in the gut – space other medicines apart from sevelamer as directed.
  • Should be used cautiously with medicines that also affect gut motility.
  • Inform your doctor of all medicines and supplements you are taking, including calcium or vitamin D supplements.

Quick Tips

  • Always take with meals – it does not work if taken on an empty stomach.
  • Keep up with your scheduled blood tests, as your dose depends on your phosphate level.
  • Tell your doctor if constipation, bloating, or stomach pain becomes bothersome.
  • Do not stop or change the dose on your own; phosphate control needs steady, doctor-guided adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cavsamir 800mg used for?

It is used to control high blood phosphate levels in adults with chronic kidney disease, including patients on dialysis.

How does Cavsamir lower phosphate?

It binds dietary phosphate in the stomach and gut so it passes out in the stool instead of entering the bloodstream.

Why do people with kidney disease need to control phosphate?

Failing kidneys cannot remove excess phosphate efficiently; over time, high phosphate can weaken bones and contribute to hardening of blood vessels.

Do I need to take this with food?

Yes, always take it with or right at the start of a meal, since it only works on phosphate from food eaten around the same time.

Can I take this if I am not on dialysis?

Some patients with earlier-stage chronic kidney disease are also prescribed sevelamer; your nephrologist will decide based on your phosphate levels.

What should I do if I get stomach upset?

Mild nausea, bloating or constipation can occur; tell your doctor if these symptoms are persistent or severe.

Will this medicine affect my calcium levels?

No, sevelamer carbonate does not contain calcium, so it will not raise your blood calcium the way some other phosphate binders can.
