Overview

Champs D-Worms Chocolate is a chocolate-flavoured chewable tablet containing albendazole 200mg as its active ingredient. It is manufactured by Duopharma Manufacturing (Bangi) Sdn. Bhd. and is classified as an OTC (Over-the-Counter) anthelmintic (deworming) product, available for purchase without a prescription in Malaysia.

Albendazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintic compounds. Champs D-Worms Chocolate is formulated as a chewable tablet with a chocolate flavour, intended to make administration easier, particularly for children. It is supplied as a chewable tablet, distinct from the suspension (200mg/5ml) format of the same brand, which is intended for younger children who cannot chew tablets.

Champs D-Worms Chocolate is sold in Malaysia in strips of 2 tablets, including multi-strip packs of 12 strips (24 tablets) for household or repeat use.

Directions for Use

Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing; it may be taken with or without food, at any time of day. If treating a household for a suspected shared infestation, a pharmacist can advise on whether other family members should be treated at the same time and on the correct tablet count for each person’s age.

Dosage

For roundworm, whipworm, pinworm, or hookworm infestation: children aged 1 to 2 years should take 1 tablet (200mg) as a single dose, while children above 2 years and adults should take 2 tablets (400mg) as a single dose. For threadworm or tapeworm infestation, children aged 1 to 2 years should take 1 tablet (200mg) once daily for 3 consecutive days, while children above 2 years and adults should take 2 tablets (400mg) once daily for 3 consecutive days. Champs D-Worms Chocolate is not recommended for children under 1 year of age unless specifically advised by a doctor. If a dose in a multi-day course is missed, take it as soon as remembered and continue the remaining course; if more than one day is missed, check with a pharmacist before continuing. A doctor or pharmacist may advise a repeat course after a period of some weeks if reinfection is suspected — do not repeat treatment sooner than advised without medical guidance.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the strip in its original packaging until ready to use, and keep out of the reach of children, as the chocolate flavour may make the tablets appealing to young children who could take them unsupervised.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Temporary hair loss
  • Elevated liver enzymes

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole anthelmintics.
  • Pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, unless specifically directed by a doctor, as albendazole has been associated with developmental toxicity in animal studies.
  • Children under 1 year of age, unless specifically advised by a doctor.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Medicines such as cimetidine, dexamethasone, or praziquantel may increase blood levels of albendazole; this is more relevant with prolonged or repeated dosing than with a single deworming dose, but check with a pharmacist if you are taking these regularly.
  • Taking albendazole with a fatty meal may increase how much of the drug is absorbed; follow the instructions on the product label regarding food, and check with a pharmacist if you have specific dietary questions.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as a general precaution with anthelmintic treatment.

Quick Tips

  • Encourage thorough handwashing before meals and after using the toilet to help reduce the risk of reinfection.
  • Wash bedding, underwear, and towels in hot water on the day treatment is started.
  • Keep fingernails trimmed short and discourage nail-biting or thumb-sucking in young children during treatment.
  • Ask your pharmacist whether other household members should be treated at the same time, since worm infestations can spread easily within a household.
  • Keep the chocolate-flavoured tablets stored well out of reach of children, since the flavour may otherwise tempt them to take extra tablets unsupervised.
  • Keep track of the date treatment was taken so you know when a doctor-advised repeat course, if any, is due.

Ingredients / Active Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Albendazole 200mg per chewable tablet.
  • Ingredient class: benzimidazole anthelmintic (anti-worm) compound.
  • Dosage form: chocolate-flavoured chewable tablet.
  • Full list of inactive/flavouring ingredients (including the chocolate flavouring base) is not publicly disclosed by the manufacturer; consult the product packaging or a pharmacist for details.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, or while breastfeeding. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to children under 2 years of age, and do not use in children under 1 year unless specifically advised. Patients with existing liver disease should check with a doctor before use, as albendazole is processed by the liver. Combine treatment with good hygiene practices (handwashing, nail trimming, washing bedding) to reduce the chance of reinfection for the whole household.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a doctor if symptoms of worm infestation persist or worsen after treatment, if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or if a young child accidentally takes more than the recommended number of tablets.
