Overview

Difflam AB Sore Throat Lozenges 12s is a medicated throat lozenge sold under the Difflam brand by Inova Pharmaceuticals and supplied as a pack of 12 lozenges. Each lozenge contains two antiseptic active ingredients: 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol 1.2 mg and Amylmetacresol 0.6 mg. The lozenges are made in several flavours for the Malaysian market, such as orange, lemon, honey lemon and blackcurrant, so the flavour shown on your pack may differ from the product photo.

Difflam AB is an antibacterial lozenge formulation and should not be confused with the Difflam Anti-Inflammatory lozenges, which contain a different active ingredient (benzydamine hydrochloride). Because several Difflam products look similar on the shelf, always read the active ingredients printed on the carton and blister pack before use. Difflam AB is also sold in a smaller pack of 6 lozenges.

As an OTC (Over-the-Counter) medicine, Difflam AB can be purchased without a doctor’s prescription. The lozenge is designed to be dissolved slowly in the mouth one at a time and is not meant to be chewed. It is suitable for adults and children aged 6 years and over, and it is not recommended for younger children.

Directions for Use

  • For adults and children aged 6 years and over: dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth, one at a time.
  • Do not chew the lozenge, and do not give it to a child who may be unable to dissolve it safely in the mouth.
  • Take one lozenge every 2-3 hours as required, and do not take more than 12 lozenges in 24 hours.
  • Keep each lozenge in its blister until you are ready to use it, and do not use any lozenge if the blister seal is broken.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
  • Do not use together with other medicated lozenges or throat products without checking the active ingredients with a pharmacist.

Dosage

Adults and children aged 6 years and over: one lozenge every 2-3 hours as required, up to a maximum of 12 lozenges in 24 hours. Difflam AB is not recommended for children under 6 years of age. The lozenge is taken as needed rather than on a fixed schedule, so there is no missed-dose rule; never take a double amount to make up for time between lozenges. If symptoms have not improved after about 3 days, or get worse, or you develop a fever, rash, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, stop self-treatment and see a doctor.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the carton and blister pack. Do not use the lozenges if the expiry date has passed or if the blister seal is broken.

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the lozenges in their blister packaging until use, and keep them out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild irritation, tingling or a change in taste in the mouth or throat after a lozenge is dissolved; this is usually short-lived.
  • Uncommon: Allergic skin reactions such as a mild rash or itching.
  • Serious: An allergic reaction such as skin rash, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Stop the lozenges and seek medical attention immediately, as swelling of the throat can interfere with breathing.
  • Serious: Difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a sore throat that keeps returning or gets worse, which may signal a problem that needs medical assessment rather than further self-treatment.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in anyone with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol, Amylmetacresol, or any other ingredient in the lozenge.
  • Not recommended for children under 6 years of age.
  • Do not use if the blister seal is broken or if the lozenge is past its expiry date.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug interactions are described in the manufacturer’s product information reviewed, but tell your pharmacist about all medicines you take, including other lozenges, throat sprays and mouth rinses.
  • Avoid taking other medicated lozenges or throat products containing similar antiseptic ingredients at the same time, as this may lead to excessive total dosing.
  • No specific food interactions are known; allow each lozenge to dissolve fully in the mouth without chewing.

Quick Tips

  • Let each lozenge dissolve slowly and completely rather than chewing or swallowing it whole.
  • Space the lozenges at least 2-3 hours apart and keep a note of how many you have taken in the day.
  • Check the pack to confirm you are holding Difflam AB (2,4-Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol and Amylmetacresol) and not a different Difflam product.
  • Check the carton for sugar content and other ingredients if you have diabetes or are watching your sugar intake, as flavours differ.
  • Keep the blister strip dry and in its original packaging so lozenges stay intact until needed.
  • Keep lozenges out of the reach of young children, who should not be given them if under 6 years old.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use, and people with diabetes should check the carton for sugar content because ingredients differ by flavour. Keep the lozenges out of the reach of young children, as they are not recommended under 6 years of age and small children may be at risk of choking.
