Overview

Drapolene Cream is a topical cream formulated around two antiseptic active ingredients, Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01% w/w and Cetrimide 0.2% w/w, in a smooth, water-miscible cream base. It is a long-established cream originating in the United Kingdom, widely recognised across UK and Commonwealth markets, including Malaysia, as a staple item in baby-care and first-aid cabinets. The cream base also contains wool fat (purified lanolin), white soft paraffin, cetyl alcohol, and cetostearyl alcohol as emollient and texture-forming excipients, together with Chlorocresol as a preservative.

Drapolene Cream has a thick, white, opaque texture designed to sit on the skin surface rather than absorb quickly, and it is supplied by DoctorOnCall in tube packaging suited to repeated use over the course of several weeks. It is formulated for topical application to intact or mildly irritated skin and is not intended for use on open wounds, broken skin with heavy discharge, or deep cuts.

As an OTC (Over-the-Counter) product, Drapolene Cream can be purchased through DoctorOnCall without a doctor’s prescription, and it is commonly kept in Malaysian and Singaporean households with young children as part of a baby skin-care routine, as well as being used by some adults for skin folds and minor topical antiseptic needs.

Directions for Use

  • Gently clean and dry the affected skin area before each application.
  • Squeeze a small amount of Drapolene Cream onto clean fingertips.
  • Apply a thin, even layer of the cream to the affected area, such as at each nappy change for babies, or as needed for adult use on skin folds.
  • Smooth the cream gently into the skin without rubbing vigorously, particularly on already irritated skin.
  • Wash your hands after application, unless you are the person being treated.
  • Reapply at each nappy change, or 2 to 3 times daily for adult use, or as advised by a pharmacist.

Dosage

Drapolene Cream does not have an oral medicine dose, as it is applied externally to the skin. A thin layer applied to the affected area at each nappy change, or up to 2 to 3 times daily for adult use on skin folds or minor irritation, is generally sufficient; applying a thicker layer or more frequently than this does not improve its effect and may make the skin feel greasy or clog the pores. If skin irritation does not improve within a few days of regular use, or appears to worsen, stop self-treatment and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Shelf Life

Use Drapolene Cream before the expiry date printed on the tube and outer carton. Always check this date, together with the batch number, before use, and once opened, try to finish the tube within the period recommended on the packaging, as a cream base can change in texture or effectiveness over time once exposed to air.

Storage Instructions

Store Drapolene Cream at room temperature, below 25°C, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the tube cap tightly closed between uses, and keep it out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use the cream if it has separated, changed colour or odour, or if the tube appears damaged.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild, transient stinging or a warm sensation at the point of application, particularly on already broken or very irritated skin.
  • Common: A feeling of greasiness on the skin immediately after application, which settles as the cream is absorbed.
  • Serious: An allergic contact reaction such as a spreading rash, increasing redness, itching, or blistering at the site of use, which needs pharmacist or medical review before continuing use.
  • Serious: Signs of a wider allergic reaction, such as facial or lip swelling or difficulty breathing, which require immediate emergency medical attention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use on individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to Benzalkonium Chloride, Cetrimide, lanolin (wool fat), Chlorocresol, or any other ingredient in this formulation.
  • Do not apply to deep wounds, heavily discharging wounds, or severe burns without first seeking medical assessment.
  • Do not use in or near the eyes.
  • Do not swallow; this product is for external skin use only.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No clinically significant drug or food interactions have been established for Drapolene Cream when used topically as directed, as the cream is applied to the skin surface and is not intended to be swallowed or absorbed systemically in meaningful amounts.

Quick Tips

  • Apply a thin layer rather than a thick one — a little Drapolene Cream goes a long way and a thin film is just as effective.
  • Change nappies promptly and clean the skin gently before each fresh application, as keeping the area dry is as important as the cream itself.
  • Do a small patch test on a small area of skin first if you or your baby has a history of sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Keep the tube cap tightly closed and avoid double-dipping fingers that have touched irritated skin back into the tube.
  • Store the tube at room temperature and check the expiry date before each use once it has been open for a while.
  • If the irritation does not settle after a few days of regular, correct use, see a doctor or pharmacist instead of continuing to apply more cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the active ingredients in Drapolene Cream?

The active ingredients are Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01% w/w and Cetrimide 0.2% w/w, both antiseptic agents, in a cream base containing wool fat (purified lanolin), white soft paraffin, cetyl alcohol, cetostearyl alcohol, and Chlorocresol as a preservative.

Can Drapolene Cream be used on a newborn baby?

Drapolene Cream is commonly used on babies as part of nappy-change skin care, but for a newborn or very young infant, it is best to check with a doctor, pharmacist, or paediatric nurse first, particularly if the baby’s skin is unusually sensitive or broken.

Can adults use Drapolene Cream too?

Yes, some adults use Drapolene Cream on skin folds or areas of minor topical irritation, following the same thin-layer application approach as for nappy care, though it is most widely known as an infant skin-care product.

Does Drapolene Cream contain lanolin, and could this be a problem for sensitive skin?

Yes, Drapolene Cream contains wool fat (purified lanolin) as part of its cream base. Lanolin is a recognised potential skin sensitiser for a small number of individuals, so anyone with a known lanolin allergy, or a history of reacting to wool-derived products, should avoid this cream or check with a pharmacist first.

How much Drapolene Cream should I apply each time?

A thin, even layer is sufficient to cover the affected skin area at each application; there is no benefit to applying a thick layer, and doing so may leave the skin feeling greasy without improving the result.

Can Drapolene Cream be used together with a nappy rash barrier cream or powder?

Combining multiple topical products on the same area at the same time is generally not recommended without pharmacist advice, as layering different creams or powders can affect how each one sits on the skin. Speak with our pharmacist team if you are considering using more than one product together.

Can I purchase Drapolene Cream online through DoctorOnCall in Malaysia or Singapore?

Yes, Drapolene Cream is available for purchase through DoctorOnCall as an online pharmacy serving customers in Malaysia and Singapore. Is the Drapolene Cream supplied by DoctorOnCall genuine and safe to use?

Relevant Information

Precautions: Check the ingredient list carefully if you or your baby has a history of sensitive skin, eczema, or an allergy to lanolin, Benzalkonium Chloride, Cetrimide, or Chlorocresol, and carry out a small patch test first if in doubt. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible between applications, since a cream alone cannot fully compensate for prolonged contact with moisture. Avoid use in or near the eyes, and do not apply to deep or heavily discharging wounds.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical or pharmacist advice if skin irritation, redness, or rash does not improve within a few days of regular, correct use, or if it spreads, blisters, or shows signs of infection such as warmth, swelling, or discharge. Seek prompt medical attention for any sign of a more serious allergic reaction, such as widespread swelling or difficulty breathing.
