Overview

Duofilm Solution is a topical liquid formulation containing two active ingredients: salicylic acid 16.7% and lactic acid 16.7%, suspended in a flexible collodion base. It is supplied as a cutaneous solution intended for external application to the skin using the built-in brush applicator, and belongs to the keratolytic class of topical products.

Duofilm Solution is sold in Malaysia as an over-the-counter (OTC) product, available without a doctor’s prescription, and is typically supplied in a 15 mL bottle with an attached applicator brush built into the cap. The flexible collodion base is designed to dry into a thin, flexible film once applied.

Duofilm’s combination of salicylic acid and lactic acid in a collodion base distinguishes it from single-ingredient salicylic acid plasters or patches, and from freezing-based (cryotherapy) skin treatments, as it works through a different topical mechanism and application method.

Directions for Use

  • Soak the affected area in warm water for about 5 minutes to soften the skin, then pat the area completely dry.
  • Using the applicator brush, apply a small amount of Duofilm Solution directly and precisely onto the affected area only, avoiding surrounding healthy skin.
  • Allow the solution to dry completely on the skin before covering the area with a plaster, sock, or shoe.
  • Replace and tighten the cap immediately after each use to prevent the solution from drying out or evaporating.
  • Apply once daily, or as directed by the product label or a healthcare professional.

Dosage

Apply a small amount to the affected area once daily, or as otherwise directed on the product label or by a pharmacist. Not applicable in the sense of an oral dose, as this is a topical solution measured by application rather than a swallowed dose. If irritation becomes severe, reduce the frequency of application or stop use and seek advice from a pharmacist or doctor. Do not apply more frequently than directed in an attempt to speed up results, as this increases the risk of skin irritation.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. Once opened, ensure the cap is replaced tightly after each use, as the solution can dry out or evaporate if left uncapped.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and away from any naked flame, as the collodion base is flammable. Keep the bottle tightly capped between uses, and keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Side Effects

  • Mild skin irritation or dryness
  • Peeling or flaking of the skin
  • Redness or a burning sensation at the application site
  • Itching or stinging
  • Allergic reaction (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to salicylic acid, lactic acid, or any other ingredient in the formulation.
  • Application to the face, mucous membranes, genital area, or moles/birthmarks.
  • Use on broken, infected, or inflamed skin, or on skin with visible blood vessels.
  • Individuals with diabetes or poor peripheral circulation, particularly for use on the feet, without prior medical advice.
  • Children under 2 years of age.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Avoid using other topical keratolytic products, such as additional salicylic acid preparations, on the same area at the same time, as this increases the risk of skin irritation and chemical burns.
  • Do not apply alongside other topical medicated creams or ointments on the exact same spot without checking with a pharmacist first.
  • Not applicable for food interactions, as this is a topical product not intended for oral use.

Quick Tips

  • Always soak and dry the area thoroughly before each application.
  • Apply only to the specific affected spot using the brush applicator, avoiding surrounding skin.
  • Let the solution dry fully before covering the area or putting on socks/shoes.
  • Replace the cap tightly immediately after each use to keep the solution from drying out.
  • Keep the bottle away from open flames, as the collodion base is flammable.
  • Do not use on the face or on broken or infected skin.
