Overview

Dyna Orapaste is an OTC topical oral paste containing Choline Salicylate, Lidocaine Hydrochloride, and Cetylpyridinium Chloride as its active ingredients. It is a combination analgesic-antiseptic paste category product, supplied in a tube for direct application to the affected area inside the mouth, and is available from pharmacies and licensed online pharmacies such as DoctorOnCall (including its Singapore storefront) without needing a doctor’s prescription.

Choline salicylate is a salicylate-family ingredient; lidocaine hydrochloride is a local anaesthetic of the amide class; and cetylpyridinium chloride is an antiseptic. Together these three ingredients are formulated as a single topical paste rather than separate products. This paste is applied with a clean finger or cotton swab and is not intended to be swallowed.

As a combination paste, Dyna Orapaste differs from single-ingredient products such as a plain antiseptic mouth rinse or a plain topical anaesthetic gel. Exact tube size and manufacturer details should be checked against the physical packaging at the time of purchase.

Directions for Use

  • Apply a small amount of the paste to the affected area using a clean finger or cotton swab.
  • Use 3 to 4 times daily, or as needed and as directed on the packaging, especially after meals and before bedtime.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after application, since the area may feel numb.
  • Use only under close adult supervision, and follow the age restriction stated on the product label, when giving to children.

Dosage

Apply a small amount of paste to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily, or as needed, following the exact frequency and age guidance printed on the product packaging. Do not exceed the labelled frequency, and do not use continuously for more than about a week without a dental or medical review. DoctorOnCall’s own product listing states the product is recommended for use in children above 6 years old, with a doctor consulted for younger children — however, current international regulatory guidance for choline-salicylate-containing oral products (for example, the UK’s MHRA in 2023 restricted such products to ages 16 and above) is materially stricter than this stated age cutoff, because of a recognised link between salicylates and Reye’s syndrome in children and teenagers. Given this discrepancy, use in anyone under 16 should not proceed without a pharmacist’s or doctor’s specific confirmation, and this age-cutoff conflict should be resolved against the current printed pack insert before publishing.

Side Effects

  • Common: mild tingling or burning sensation, and temporary numbness of the mouth, at the application site.
  • Common: a temporary change in taste near the applied area.
  • Serious: a rare allergic reaction (swelling, rash, difficulty breathing), or mucosal irritation with excessive or frequent use, which requires stopping use and seeking medical or dental advice.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to salicylates, lidocaine or other amide-class local anaesthetics, cetylpyridinium chloride, or any other ingredient in the paste.
  • Not recommended for children and teenagers under the age stated on the current product label, given the recognised link between salicylate-containing oral products and Reye’s syndrome.
  • Not for use on broken skin or open wounds beyond the intended oral mucosa application area.
  • Avoid swallowing more than a trace amount of the paste.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Avoid combining with other salicylate-containing products (such as oral aspirin) at the same time, to prevent cumulative salicylate exposure.
  • Avoid combining with other topical oral anaesthetic or numbing products on the same area at the same time, to prevent duplicate local-anaesthetic exposure.
  • Avoid eating or drinking hot food or beverages immediately after application, since the numbing effect may mask the sensation of heat and increase the risk of an accidental burn or biting the numbed area.

Quick Tips

  • Use only a small amount with a clean finger or cotton swab.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after application.
  • Do not exceed the frequency stated on the packaging.
  • Keep the tube out of reach of children, given the salicylate-related risks of ingestion.
  • See a dentist if mouth soreness or ulceration persists beyond about a week.
  • Check the age guidance on the current pack label carefully before use in a child or teenager.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Salicylate-containing oral products carry a recognised link to Reye’s syndrome in children and teenagers, particularly during a viral illness — international regulatory guidance in some markets restricts choline-salicylate oral products to ages 16 and above, which is stricter than the “above 6 years” age guidance on some current listings, so this product should only be used in children or teenagers strictly according to the age guidance stated on the current physical pack, confirmed with a pharmacist if there is any doubt. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use. Avoid swallowing more than a trace amount.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: See a dentist or doctor if mouth soreness or an ulcer persists beyond about 7-10 days, worsens, recurs frequently, or is accompanied by fever or signs of infection, or if any signs of an allergic reaction occur.
