Overview

Eagle Telon Oil is a baby oil for external use, made by Eagle Brand and supplied over the counter in small bottles. According to the product information, it is a blend of coconut oil, eucalyptus oil and fennel oil. Telon oil is a traditional Southeast Asian preparation that is massaged onto a baby’s skin, and it has a mild, warm and herbal aroma.

Coconut oil forms the base of the product and gives it a light, smooth texture that spreads easily during a gentle massage. Eucalyptus oil and fennel oil are aromatic essential oils that provide the characteristic fragrance, and eucalyptus oil in particular must be used carefully because it can be harmful if swallowed or if it reaches a baby’s face and nose. For this reason the oil should only ever be applied to the skin of the body, and always by an adult.

Eagle Telon Oil is available in bottle sizes including 30 ml and 60 ml, so please check the product page for the sizes currently listed. As with any product used on a baby, a patch test and a check with a doctor or pharmacist are advisable, particularly for newborns and very young babies or babies with sensitive skin or eczema-prone skin. Our pharmacist team is happy to answer questions before you order.

Directions for Use

Wash your hands and make sure your baby’s skin is clean and dry.

Do a patch test first: place a small amount of oil on the inside of your baby’s wrist, wait about 30 minutes, and check for redness, swelling or irritation. Do not use the oil if any reaction appears.

Pour a few drops into your palm and rub your hands together to warm the oil. Eagle Brand baby oil labelling advises about 5 to 10 drops; please follow the instructions on your own pack.

Massage gently onto the skin of the chest, tummy, hips and feet, avoiding the face, the area around the nose and mouth, the hands that go into the mouth, and any broken skin.

For external use only. Wash your hands after use, keep the bottle out of your baby’s reach, and close the cap tightly.

Dosage

Apply a few drops (about 5 to 10 drops, or as directed on the pack) to the skin of the chest, tummy, hips and feet, once or twice a day as needed, or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not apply large amounts, and do not use more often than directed.

If you miss an application, simply apply at the next usual time. Stop using the oil and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if your baby’s skin becomes red, rashy or irritated, or if your baby seems unwell after use.

Shelf Life

Use before the expiry date printed on the bottle and carton. Natural oils can turn rancid over time, so if the oil develops a sour or unusual smell or its colour changes, stop using it and replace it.

Storage Instructions

Store at room temperature, below 30 °C, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and open flames. Keep the bottle tightly closed and well out of reach of children, as swallowing eucalyptus oil can be very dangerous.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild redness or dryness of the skin where the oil was applied, especially in babies with sensitive skin.
  • Common: A strong herbal aroma that some babies and parents do not tolerate well, which may trigger fussiness or a runny nose.
  • Serious: A widespread rash, swelling, blistering or marked redness after application. Wipe off the oil, wash the area gently with water and see a doctor, as this may be a skin allergy.
  • Serious: Coughing, choking, noisy or difficult breathing, drowsiness or limpness if oil reaches the baby’s face or nose or is swallowed. This can be a sign of eucalyptus oil poisoning and is a medical emergency.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if your baby is allergic to coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, fennel oil or any other ingredient in the oil.
  • Do not apply to the face, the area around the nose or mouth, the eyes, or the inside of the nostrils.
  • Do not apply to broken, inflamed, infected or eczema-flared skin without medical advice.
  • Do not swallow the oil. Do not give it by mouth or put it in a baby’s nose or ears.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • No drug interactions are known when the oil is used as directed on intact skin.
  • If you apply other creams, lotions or medicated products to your baby’s skin, ask a pharmacist before using them together with the oil on the same area.
  • People allergic to plants in the carrot and celery family (including fennel) should be careful, as fennel oil can trigger allergy in sensitive individuals.
  • No food interactions are known.

Quick Tips

  • Always do the wrist patch test and wait about 30 minutes before using the oil on a baby for the first time.
  • Warm the oil between your palms first so it feels comfortable on your baby’s skin.
  • Keep the oil away from your baby’s face, nose and hands, because babies put their hands in their mouths.
  • Avoid using it near open flames, candles or heaters, as the aromatic oils are flammable.
  • Use a gentle, unhurried massage and stop if your baby cries, coughs or seems uncomfortable.
  • Store the bottle high up and out of reach of toddlers, as accidental swallowing of eucalyptus oil is dangerous.
