Egoderm Cream

Egoderm Cream is a topical cream formulated with ichthammol and zinc oxide, sold under the Ego brand and distributed in Malaysia as an over-the-counter product available without a doctor’s prescription. Ichthammol is a sulfonated shale-oil derivative long used in dermatological preparations, while zinc oxide is a mineral compound with a long history of use in skin-protectant formulations. Unlike Egoderm Ointment, which shares the same two core ingredients but adds salicylic acid in a thicker ointment base, Egoderm Cream is formulated in a lighter cream base.

The cream is supplied in a 25g tube, sized for targeted application to small areas of skin rather than large-scale body use. Its lighter cream base generally absorbs more quickly into the skin than an ointment, which can make it a more comfortable option for daytime use under clothing.

Ichthammol has mild antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties linked to its sulfur-containing compounds, and it has traditionally been used in topical preparations for minor, localised skin irritation. Zinc oxide acts as a mild astringent and forms a light physical barrier over the treated area, helping to shield the skin’s surface while the ichthammol acts locally.

Because Egoderm Cream uses a cream base rather than a heavier ointment base, it tends to spread more easily and absorb faster, though it may not remain on the skin’s surface for as long as an ointment formulation. This makes the choice between the cream and ointment versions largely one of texture and how long the product needs to stay on the treated area.

Clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer of cream over the affected skin and rub in gently until absorbed. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands themselves are being treated. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes, and do not apply to broken, infected, or actively weeping skin.

Apply a thin layer of Egoderm Cream to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily, or as directed by a pharmacist or doctor. This is a topical-only product with no oral dose.

A specific shelf-life duration for Egoderm Cream is not independently verified; check the expiry date printed on the tube and carton and do not use the product beyond this date.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Replace the cap tightly after each use and keep out of reach of children.

• Serious: Signs of an allergic skin reaction such as widespread rash, swelling, or blistering, which require the cream to be stopped and medical advice sought.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using the cream and seek medical advice if a rash, swelling, blistering, or worsening irritation develops. See a doctor if the treated skin does not improve with regular use, becomes more painful, or shows signs of infection such as increasing redness, warmth, or discharge.
