Enhancin 625mg Tablet contains amoxicillin 500mg and clavulanic acid 125mg (as potassium clavulanate), combined as a 625mg tablet of co-amoxiclav – a penicillin antibiotic combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, ear, nose and throat, urinary tract, and skin/soft tissue infections.
Amoxicillin kills bacteria by interfering with the formation of their cell wall. However, some bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase that can destroy amoxicillin before it takes effect. Clavulanic acid blocks this enzyme, protecting amoxicillin and restoring its effectiveness against a broader range of bacteria.
How it Works
Amoxicillin disrupts the construction of the bacterial cell wall, causing susceptible bacteria to weaken and die. Clavulanic acid, while having little antibacterial activity of its own, irreversibly binds to and inactivates beta-lactamase enzymes that some bacteria use to destroy penicillins, allowing amoxicillin to remain effective against these otherwise resistant bacteria.
