Overview

Exforge 10/160mg Tablet is a fixed-dose combination containing amlodipine 10mg (a calcium channel blocker) and valsartan 160mg (an angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB). It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled with either medicine alone.

Amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessels by blocking the entry of calcium into vascular smooth muscle cells, while valsartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a hormone that normally narrows blood vessels. Together, these two complementary mechanisms produce a greater blood-pressure-lowering effect than either medicine used on its own.

How it Works

Amlodipine inhibits calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle, producing vasodilation and reduced peripheral resistance. Valsartan selectively blocks the AT1 receptor, preventing angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels and triggering aldosterone release. Combining a calcium channel blocker with an ARB targets two separate blood-pressure pathways, giving more effective control while allowing lower doses of each component.

Directions for Use

Take Exforge 10/160mg Tablet at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well, as blood pressure control needs to be continuous.

Dosage

Exforge 10/160mg Tablet is usually taken once daily. Your doctor will determine the appropriate starting dose and may adjust it based on your blood pressure response, particularly if you are switching from the individual components taken separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Exforge 10/160mg Tablet used for?

Exforge 10/160mg Tablet is used to treat high blood pressure that is not fully controlled by either amlodipine or valsartan alone, combining a calcium channel blocker with an ARB in one tablet.

Why does this medicine cause ankle swelling?

Amlodipine can widen small blood vessels more than veins, which can lead to mild fluid build-up in the ankles or legs in some people. Tell your doctor if the swelling is bothersome or severe.

Can I switch to Exforge 10/160mg Tablet from my current separate blood pressure tablets?

Your doctor can guide you on switching to this combination tablet if you are already stable on the individual components at matching doses, to simplify your regimen.

How long does it take to see the full effect on blood pressure?

Some effect can be seen within the first 1-2 weeks, but the full blood-pressure-lowering effect is usually reached after about 4 weeks of regular use.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Exforge 10/160mg Tablet?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose – in that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
