Flanil Cream

Flanil Cream is a topical analgesic cream made for external use only. It is a smooth, fast-absorbing cream base that combines methyl salicylate, eucalyptus oil and menthol, giving it a light, aromatic scent. The cream is applied directly to the skin and is not intended to be swallowed or used on mucous membranes.

Methyl salicylate is a salicylate ester, while eucalyptus oil and menthol are plant-derived counter-irritants that create cooling and warming sensations on the skin. Because the base is a cream rather than a liquid, it is easy to control the amount applied and it spreads evenly with a gentle circular massage. The product is supplied in tubes in the pack sizes shown in the variation options on this page.

This cream is for external use only. Wash and dry your hands and make sure the skin area is clean, dry and free of cuts, rashes or irritation. Squeeze out a small amount of cream and apply a thin layer to the intended area of intact skin.

Gently rub the cream into the skin in circular motions until it is fully absorbed. Apply two to three times daily, or as directed on the pack leaflet, and do not exceed the stated frequency. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after each application, unless the hands are the area being treated.

Do not apply to broken skin or wounds, and do not cover the area with tight bandages or plasters. Avoid heat sources such as heating pads or hot water bottles over the treated area, and keep the cream away from the eyes, nose, lips and any other mucous membrane.

For adults and children aged 12 years and above, apply a thin layer to the intended area two to three times daily, or as directed on the pack leaflet. Do not apply more than the amount or frequency stated on the packaging, and avoid applying to very large areas of the body, as methyl salicylate can be absorbed through the skin.

This product is not recommended for young children unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist. If a dose is missed, apply at the next scheduled time and do not apply extra to make up for a missed application. Stop using the product and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if the skin becomes irritated or if the problem persists after several days of use.

Store at room temperature, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap tightly closed after each use and keep out of the reach and sight of children.

• Common: Mild redness, warmth or tingling at the application site, which usually fades soon after application.
• Common: Skin dryness or mild irritation with repeated application over several days.
• Common: Strong menthol and eucalyptus scent that some people find unpleasant in enclosed spaces.
• Serious: Allergic skin reaction such as rash, itching, swelling or blistering at the application site; stop use immediately and seek medical advice.
• Serious: Burn-like skin reaction, particularly after application under tight bandages or combined with heat; seek medical attention promptly.
• Serious: Signs of salicylate absorption after heavy or widespread use, such as ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting or unusual drowsiness; seek urgent medical care.

• Known allergy or hypersensitivity to methyl salicylate, salicylates, aspirin, NSAIDs, menthol, eucalyptus oil or any other ingredient in the product.
• Application to open wounds, cuts, burns, eczema, rashes or other areas of broken or irritated skin.
• Application to the eyes, inside the nose or mouth, the genital area or any mucous membrane.
• Use under tight bandages or occlusive dressings, or together with heat sources such as heating pads or hot water bottles.
• Use on infants and young children unless advised by a doctor, because aromatic oils can be harmful to them.

• Warfarin and other anticoagulant medicines: methyl salicylate can be absorbed through the skin and may increase the blood-thinning effect, particularly with heavy or prolonged use; consult a doctor or pharmacist first.
• Oral aspirin, other salicylates and NSAIDs: using these with a large area of salicylate-containing cream may add to the total salicylate load.
• Other topical products applied to the same area, such as creams, gels, patches or liniments: avoid layering products on the same skin site.
• Heating pads, hot compresses and hot water bottles should not be used on the treated area, as heat increases skin absorption and the risk of irritation.
• No known interactions with food or drink.

• Apply a thin layer only; using more cream does not make it work faster and may increase skin irritation.
• Wash your hands thoroughly after each application and avoid touching your eyes, nose or lips afterwards.
• Test a small area first if you have sensitive skin or have never used a menthol and methyl salicylate cream.
• Allow the cream to absorb fully before dressing, and avoid tight clothing over the treated area until it has dried.
• Avoid a very hot shower or bath immediately before or after applying the cream.
• Keep the tube tightly closed and out of the reach of children, and do not use it on or near a child’s face.

Precautions: Use for external use only on clean, intact skin. Do a small patch test if you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions to topical products, aspirin or other salicylates. Avoid applying to large areas, avoid occlusive bandages and heat sources, and wash your hands after use. Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking anticoagulant medicines or have asthma triggered by aspirin, kidney disease or a bleeding disorder. Keep out of the reach of children and do not apply to the face of young children.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop using the cream and seek medical advice if you notice persistent redness, swelling, blistering, severe itching or burning at the application site, or if you develop a rash, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent medical attention if the cream is swallowed, if a child has been exposed to it, or if you notice ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting or drowsiness after heavy use. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if the problem you are applying it to does not improve after several days, gets worse or keeps returning.
