Overview

Fluifort 9g/100ml Syrup is an Over-the-Counter (OTC) liquid medicine containing carbocisteine, an active ingredient from the mucolytic class of respiratory products. The syrup is formulated at a concentration of 9g of carbocisteine per 100ml (equivalent to 900mg per 10ml), supplied as a ready-to-use oral liquid.

As an OTC product, Fluifort Syrup can be purchased at pharmacies and through online pharmacies serving Malaysia and Singapore without needing a doctor’s prescription, though checking with a pharmacist before starting any new medicine is advisable, especially for a child, an elderly person, or someone with an existing medical condition. Carbocisteine syrups are sold in several different strengths internationally, and this 9g/100ml concentration is notably higher than some lower-strength carbocisteine syrups on the market, so doses should never be assumed to be interchangeable between brands or strengths.

Fluifort Syrup is supplied in a bottle intended for repeated measured dosing with the measuring cup provided in the pack. The exact bottle volume, batch number, and expiry date are printed on the outer carton and should be checked at the time of purchase.

Directions for Use

  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Measure the dose using the measuring cup provided in the pack, not an ordinary household spoon.
  • Take the measured dose by mouth, preferably after a meal to help reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Rinse the measuring cup with clean water after each use.

Dosage

Because this 9g/100ml concentration is a notably higher-strength carbocisteine syrup than some other regional formulations, and because publicly available reference sources describe dosing regimens for carbocisteine syrups that vary meaningfully in both dose volume and dosing frequency depending on the exact strength, a specific dose and frequency for this product is not asserted here. Always follow the dosing table printed on the pack insert for this exact product, or ask a pharmacist to confirm the correct dose for the patient’s age, before use. Carbocisteine-containing products are generally not given to children under 2 years of age. Do not exceed the maximum daily dose stated on the pack insert.

Storage Instructions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach and sight of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed between uses, and discard it if the liquid changes colour, becomes cloudy, or develops an unusual smell.

Side Effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Headache
  • Skin rash or itching (rare)

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity (allergy) to carbocisteine or any other ingredient in this syrup.
  • Active peptic (stomach) ulcer disease.
  • Children under 2 years of age.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Taking this syrup together with a cough-suppressant (antitussive) medicine is not recommended, as suppressing the cough reflex while loosening mucus can cause mucus to build up in the airway.
  • No clinically significant drug interactions have been established for carbocisteine in general use, but tell a doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines being taken, as individual patient factors can still matter.
  • No significant food interactions are known; this syrup may be taken with or after food to help reduce stomach discomfort.

Quick Tips

  • Always use the measuring cup supplied with the pack for an accurate dose.
  • Shake the bottle well before every dose.
  • Take the dose after a meal if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed and stored out of children’s reach between doses.
  • Note the date the bottle was first opened so you can check how long it remains usable.
  • Do not combine this syrup with another cough or cold product without checking for duplicate active ingredients first.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Use with caution in a patient with a history of severe respiratory failure or reduced ability to clear secretions from the airway, as loosened mucus still needs to be cleared effectively. Caution is also advised in a patient with asthma or a history of bronchospasm. This syrup is not recommended for children under 2 years of age, and use in pregnancy or breastfeeding should only be on a doctor’s advice.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Seek medical advice if a cough lasts more than about a week, is accompanied by high fever, breathing difficulty, or blood in the sputum, or if symptoms worsen despite using this syrup as directed. Stop the syrup and see a doctor promptly if signs of stomach bleeding (such as black stools) appear.
