Overview

Fosrenol 1000mg Chewable Tablet contains lanthanum carbonate 1000mg, a non-calcium, non-aluminium phosphate binder used to lower high blood phosphate levels (hyperphosphataemia) in patients with chronic kidney disease, including those on dialysis.

Lanthanum carbonate works within the gut, where it binds to dietary phosphate from food, forming an insoluble complex that is not absorbed into the bloodstream and is instead passed out in the stool, reducing the amount of phosphate available for absorption.

How it Works

Dietary phosphate is normally absorbed from food in the intestine. Lanthanum carbonate releases lanthanum ions in the acidic environment of the stomach, which bind tightly to phosphate from food to form an insoluble lanthanum phosphate complex. This complex is not absorbed and is eliminated in the stool, lowering the amount of phosphate that enters the bloodstream.

Directions for Use

Fosrenol 1000mg Chewable Tablet tablets must be chewed thoroughly until completely broken up – do not swallow them whole – and taken with or immediately after meals, since lanthanum carbonate needs to be present in the stomach at the same time as your food to bind dietary phosphate effectively.

Dosage

The dose of Fosrenol 1000mg Chewable Tablet is individualised by your doctor based on your blood phosphate level, and is usually taken with each meal. Your doctor will periodically check your blood phosphate and may adjust your dose accordingly. Do not change your dose without medical advice.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to lanthanum carbonate or any ingredient in this product
  • Bowel obstruction, ileus, or acute peptic ulcer disease
  • Not recommended in severe gastrointestinal disorders that may worsen with a phosphate binder

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Antibiotics such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones may have reduced absorption if taken at the same time – separate dosing is usually advised
  • Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) absorption may be reduced – take at a different time from lanthanum carbonate
  • Medicines that depend on stomach acid or gut pH for absorption may be affected – tell your doctor about all medicines you take
  • Taking this medicine without food reduces its effectiveness, as it needs to bind phosphate from a meal

Quick Tips

  • Always chew tablets thoroughly – never swallow whole
  • Take every dose with or immediately after a meal, not on an empty stomach
  • Do not skip doses, as this reduces phosphate control
  • Keep regular blood test appointments to monitor your phosphate level
  • Space other oral medicines apart from this product if your doctor advises, to avoid absorption interactions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to chew Fosrenol 1000mg Chewable Tablet instead of swallowing it whole?

Chewing breaks the tablet into small particles that mix thoroughly with food in the stomach, allowing lanthanum to bind dietary phosphate effectively. Swallowing it whole reduces its ability to work properly.

Why must Fosrenol 1000mg Chewable Tablet be taken with meals?

Lanthanum carbonate needs to be present in the stomach at the same time as food to bind the phosphate contained in that meal. Taking it away from meals significantly reduces its effectiveness.

What happens if I take this medicine on an empty stomach?

It will have little phosphate to bind, so its ability to lower your blood phosphate level will be reduced. Always take it with or immediately after food.

Will this medicine replace my dietary phosphate restrictions?

No, this medicine works alongside, not instead of, any dietary phosphate advice from your doctor or dietitian. Continue following your recommended diet unless advised otherwise.

How will my doctor know if the dose is working?

Your doctor will check your blood phosphate level periodically through blood tests and adjust your dose based on the results.
