Overview

Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder contains beclometasone dipropionate 100mcg and formoterol fumarate 6mcg per actuation (Chiesi), delivered via a Nexthaler (dry powder, breath-actuated). It combines an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) with a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) for the regular maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), reducing airway inflammation and keeping the airways open.

Beclometasone reduces inflammation in the airways, while formoterol relaxes the smooth muscle around the airways by stimulating beta2-adrenergic receptors, widening the airways within minutes and for up to about 12 hours. Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder uses Chiesi’s extrafine particle formulation, designed to reach further into the smaller airways of the lungs than standard particle-size inhalers.

How it Works

Beclometasone dipropionate is a corticosteroid that reduces the release of inflammatory substances in the airway lining, decreasing swelling, mucus production, and airway sensitivity over time. Formoterol fumarate is a long-acting beta2-agonist that binds to beta2-receptors on airway smooth muscle, causing it to relax so the airways widen. Together, the two components both calm airway inflammation and keep the airways open between doses.

Directions for Use

Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder is delivered using the Nexthaler, a breath-actuated dry powder inhaler that does not require shaking or manual coordination of pressing a canister. Open the cap fully until you hear a click, breathe out gently away from the device, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and inhale forcefully and deeply – the dose is released automatically as you breathe in. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds before breathing out slowly, then close the cap. Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after use.

Dosage

The usual dose of Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder is 1-2 inhalations twice daily, as prescribed by your doctor, who will adjust the number of inhalations based on your symptom control and lung function. Do not increase your dose on your own even if symptoms worsen – contact your doctor, as this may mean your treatment plan needs to be reviewed.

Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Dry mouth or throat irritation
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Nausea
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Fungal infections in the mouth (oral thrush)
  • Increased heart rate

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to beclometasone, formoterol, or any ingredient in this product
  • Not to be used as a rescue/reliever inhaler for a sudden asthma attack or acute breathlessness – a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler should always be available
  • Use with caution in patients with heart rhythm problems, uncontrolled heart disease, or thyrotoxicosis, due to the stimulant effects of formoterol

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Other beta2-agonist bronchodilators may increase the risk of tremor, palpitations, and low blood potassium if used together
  • Beta-blocker medicines (including some eye drops) may reduce the effectiveness of formoterol and should generally be avoided
  • Medicines that prolong the QT interval, or certain antidepressants/antipsychotics, may increase the risk of heart rhythm effects with formoterol
  • Potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ritonavir, ketoconazole) may increase systemic exposure to beclometasone

Quick Tips

  • Always keep a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler with you for sudden symptoms – this inhaler is not for rapid relief
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every use to reduce the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness
  • Use this inhaler regularly, even when you feel well, for it to control inflammation effectively
  • Ask your pharmacist to review your inhaler technique periodically
  • Do not stop this medicine suddenly without your doctor’s advice, even if your symptoms improve

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder different from a reliever inhaler?

Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder is a maintenance (preventer) inhaler used regularly to control airway inflammation and keep airways open over time. It is not for rapid relief of sudden breathlessness – always keep a separate fast-acting reliever inhaler on hand for that.

Why do I need to rinse my mouth after using Foster Nexthaler 100/6mcg Inhalation Powder?

The inhaled corticosteroid component can cause oral thrush or hoarseness if it settles in the mouth and throat. Rinsing with water and spitting it out after each use reduces this risk.

How should I use the Nexthaler (dry powder, breath-actuated) correctly?

Follow the specific steps for your device – technique differs between a breath-actuated inhaler and a pressurised metered-dose inhaler. Ask your pharmacist to check your technique to make sure you receive the full dose.

Can I stop using this inhaler once my symptoms improve?

No, continue using it as prescribed even when you feel well, since it works by controlling ongoing airway inflammation. Stopping suddenly can allow your asthma or COPD to worsen.

What if my breathlessness suddenly gets worse after using this inhaler?

Stop use and seek urgent medical attention, as this may indicate paradoxical bronchospasm, a rare but serious reaction to the inhaler.
