Overview

Galvus 50mg Tablet contains vildagliptin 50mg, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines such as metformin, a sulfonylurea, or insulin.

Vildagliptin works by blocking the enzyme DPP-4, which increases the levels of incretin hormones in the body. These hormones help the pancreas release more insulin and reduce the amount of sugar produced by the liver, both in a blood-sugar-dependent manner that lowers the risk of low blood sugar compared to some older diabetes medicines.

How it Works

Vildagliptin inhibits the DPP-4 enzyme, which is normally responsible for breaking down incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) shortly after they are released. By slowing this breakdown, vildagliptin prolongs the action of these hormones, boosting insulin release after meals and suppressing excess glucagon release, which together lower blood glucose levels.

Directions for Use

Take Galvus 50mg Tablet at about the same time(s) each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. If you are prescribed twice-daily dosing, take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, and continue following your doctor’s advice on diet and exercise alongside this medicine.

Dosage

The usual dose of Galvus 50mg Tablet is 50mg once or twice daily depending on which other diabetes medicines you are taking; your doctor will individualise the dose and frequency based on your blood sugar control, kidney function, and other medicines. Do not change your dose without your doctor’s advice, and continue regular blood sugar monitoring as instructed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Galvus 50mg Tablet used for?

Galvus 50mg Tablet is used together with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be prescribed alone or alongside other diabetes medicines.

Can vildagliptin cause low blood sugar on its own?

Vildagliptin alone has a low risk of causing hypoglycaemia because it works in a blood-sugar-dependent way, but the risk increases when it is combined with a sulfonylurea or insulin.

Do I need any blood tests while taking this medicine?

Yes, your doctor will usually check your liver function periodically, especially in the first year of treatment, and will monitor your overall blood sugar control (such as HbA1c) at regular intervals.
